Auf dem 4. Workshop der vom @umweltministerium, @wikimediaDE, @Umweltbundesamt und uns veranstalteten Reihe „Souvereign. Sustainable. Digital“ ging es heute um eine nachhaltige #digitale #Infrastruktur.
Problematisch erscheint weiterhin der hohe #Energieverbrauch 🔌 von #Rechenzentren und der Übertragungsnetze 📡 für mobile Anwendungen wie von Prof. Mario Birkholz von der @tuberlin in seinem Einführungsvortrag ausgeführt.
In einer kürzlich erschienen Studie hatte er gemeinsam mit Kolleg:innen Vorschläge für eine nachhaltigere Nutzung von #Smartphones gemacht:

Wichtiger Bestandteil: der Wechsel von den großen Internet-Plattformen hin zu wirklich sozialen Medien – wie #Mastodon 🦣 und anderen #Fediverse-Diensten.
Sein Resumé: es besteht kein Grund zur Entwarnung. Der Energieverbrauch des #Digitalsektors ist wesentlich mitverantwortlich, wenn wir die Vorgaben des Pariser #Klimaschutzabkommens verfehlen.

The era of subscriptions for everything?
Music subscription (Apple, Spotify etc). Subscription to social networks (Meta, X). Subscription to Messenger (Telegram Premium, Viber Plus etc). Sneaker subscription (On.com). Subscription for car seat heaters. What's next?
I found it hard to accept that the whole world was immersed in a subscription form of payment. You cannot own anything anymore; once your bank card runs out of money, you are cut off from the whole world.
You are immersed in a plethora of advertising. You can no longer use your programs; you are cut off from everything.
When did we take the wrong turn? When did a smartphone wallpaper app decide to become “big business” and just demand $10 a week? Why has this become the norm? 🥲

Was able to make it to the coast one evening and barely found the legendary shipwreck (according to the lore, who knows what it actually is from) that I've previously posted covered in moss and seaweed now getting buried in sand! It'll be made free of the sand again and it is always so interesting seeing how it changes!
