Happy to have a Mastodon post of mine cited in the academic article "Fediverse’s Evolution from the Cultural-Historical Activity Theory" by José- Manuel Meza-Cano and Edith González-Santiago. In: Fast Capitalism, 2023, 20(1). URL: fastcapitalism.journal.library

Thanks to @Sascha & @Johannes from @bonndigital for the great instance @bonnsocial that made this possible!

My toot from 2021 was about #universities in #Mastodon / #Fediverse: bonn.social/@gerald_leppert/10

I have maintained for some time that we need a #Fediverse - based alternative to #Quora :

1. Because #GoogleSucks and the other search engines are likewise increasingly filled up with LLM-based filth.

2. Quora itself is overrun by Nazis and other crazies.

But we could still use some kind of system where we can ask for information, and receive answers from actual human beings. A federated approach to Quora might work for this need.

I've tried a lot of alternatives over the years but even with a reduced number of communities it feels fragmented and way less lively. the sad fact is that Reddit is still the place where I find the most sense of community spirit and the kind of content I am actually interested in

and that's despite Reddit having arguably one of the most tech-savvy user bases

apparently it is really difficult for a good Reddit alternative to really take off

@everton137 Although I know the #Fediverse is pretty techy much of my feed isn't and the people I mostly converse with aren't computer techy even if they are mostly computer literate.
However I was surprised that a recent poll I came across found that 53% of it's respondents had a Github account (albeit not all being still keen on, or big users of, that increasingly enshittified MS platform).

@wolnyjez @EUCommission got your point and I do agree, we as the people always need to keep an eye out!
On the other hand there are rules like kyc already in action. And I do think things like this could come in handy there and even improve data privacy and reduce the risk of personal data being stolen / hacked.

But in principle, many of the issues we as a society face on various plattforms are the result of massive multi-national companies in control of heavily centralized plattforms. So the only and only democratic solution is decentralized infrastructure. Going back to the original idea of the internet anyways. Big shoutout to the #fediverse here!
And I can only encourage everybody out there to either support their local instance or -even better - hosting their own for family and freiends. It's actually not too complicated and is operable on small scale even on a Raspberry Pi at home. 😉

So I wonder: are there already initiatives I can support? Open letters to the government demanding public schools should use media?
And should schools offer servers, expanding the ?

This made me wonder: if public schools would switch to the for communication, parents would be motivated to get accounts, making a switch from using owned (anti)social platforms more likely. Right now, the emotional cost of switching is too high for most. Why go to a platform if none of your friends and family are there?

I noticed public schools in Belgium use Facebook and Whatsapp for communication with parents. Both owned. Extremely popular, but people here know how terrible Meta is.
