As someone who has struggled with (and acted on) suicidality, I'm not a fan of blaming suicide on ChatGPT. To put it bluntly, it reeks to me of the love and light ableism that infests much of so-called "suicide prevention", which infantilizes suicidal people and treats them as poor, diseased freaks of nature that should be pitied and shown compassion in favor of actually examining the systemic injustices and societal failings that *make* people suicidal in the first place.
Are there edge cases where someone who is schizophrenic or otherwise inclined towards delusion might be manipulated into suicide by ChatGPT? Yeah, certainly. I think that's a real risk. This isn't a defense of ChatGPT. But lately it seems like people are acting as if ChatGPT is an assembly line that turns healthy neurotypicals with satisfying lives and fulfilling relationships into victims of suicide, and I have to wonder if the people doing this really care about neurodivergent people, or if we're just cannon fodder to be used against AI.
If anything, the fact that so many people discuss suicide with ChatGPT should indicate to us that we, as a society, are failing suicidal people. We are not offering suicidal people the resources they need. We are not offering them help. So instead they're turning to the soulless machine which is good at acting like it cares about them. Is that a good thing? Absolutely not. Does it make things worse? Probably! But acting as if ChatGPT is out here killing people seems like yet another attempt by neurotypicals to find some convenient scapegoat to blame suicide on instead of looking at how they, themselves, and the systems they've built and continue to build, are failing neurodivergent people.
We live in a world that's fucking dystopian. People are turning to a fucking *LLM* for help because they're so fucking desperate. Why can't that be the story instead of "neurotypical Niel walks into suicide machine, comes out a dead person"?
