Only a tiny tiny tiny tiny tiny fraction of users is not dependent on infrastructure. Basically all users - and literally all users - are dependent on and their decisions. That's a simple reality which cannot be taken away by all the tech talk how cool is in theory.

Content warning:An ATmosphere PDS is not a fully independent, fully decentralised, fully autonomous server stack like a Fediverse server, and here's why! CW: long (over 1,200 characters), Fediverse meta, Fediverse-beyond-Mastodon meta, ATmosphere meta

As long as Mississippi can block 99.99% of the ATmosphere by blocking bsky.social...

...because 99.99% of the ATmosphere, including allegedly "fully independent" PDS, rely on bsky.social's AppView/relay stack...

...because people can afford to run their own PDS that's connected to someone else's AppView/relay stack, but not to run their own full PDS/AppView/relay stack...

...because it costs tens of thousands of dollars or Euros per year to run your own AppView/relay stack...

...because each AppView/relay stack in the ATmosphere must contain literally all data of the entire ATmosphere...

...because that's how the AT protocol works...

...as long as this is the case, the ATmosphere will never be every bit as fully decentralised as the Fediverse.

For 99.99% of the Fediverse do not rely on mastodon.social's SQL database. Only 22% do, and that's mastodon.social itself.

An ATmosphere PDS is not a fully independent, fully decentralised, fully autonomous server stack like a Fediverse server!

Might be time to go back to the way life was before social media.

"A new law in Mississippi requires age verification to access social media sites. This landmark piece of legislation goes even further than other laws that require age verification for sites featuring explicit content. Bluesky announced on Friday that it would stop operating in the state because of the law, noting concerns over the cost burden and privacy of its users."

I think it's claim that the current consequences for users and users are the same is denying reality. But I believe this discussion landed in a non-constructive dead end.

To switch topic to an exciting aspect: I'm excited that bidgy works much better than I expected. It's still a long way, but it gives me hope that one day we will truly break down the walls between all platform and protocol silos.

On a more trivial note, #Bluesky doesn't have post edit or polls. I need those things in my life.

It's actually risible too. I'm just a user of both services, but it never even occured to me to regard #bluesky as decentralised.

Decentralisation means having many instances with large user bases.

If Mastodon Social went down, mastodon would still survive. If the main BSKY server went down, there would be no more Bluesky.

You only have to look at the real world. Bluesky users in Mississippi still using the service is negligible.

That's the only test that matters.

Yes, but my point is that the consequences for the users are much worse for users because of lack of decentralization mastodon.social/@folkerschamel

A bad law does not eliminate the difference between effectively centralized and decentralized social networks.

I think I gave a very specific argument why it is not meaningless.

I would respect an argument along the line "well, I know that the fediverse / mastodon is much better regarding than , but overall is still much better because of x y z", but I smells disingenuous to me to claim that is as decentralized as .
