Don’t recognize the name Jesse Singal? Here is the article he wrote in 2018 that was met with backlash from the #transgender community.
A major point of contention is that the piece gives significant attention to detransitioners or "desisters" (people who later cease to identify as transgender, or regret or reverse part of a transition). For a long stretch of the article (first 9K words), there was no story of a well-adjusted, happily transitioned #trans youth.

Alright I’ll bite. What’s going on over in #Bluesky? I keep seeing vague references to drama but not what’s actually happened. Classic Masto I guess.
While the #Schadenfreude at what is happening at #Bluesky might be great, there are absolutely good reasons why a lot of people do not truest the #Fediverse , and most of these reasons are cultural.
The most important reason of these is that the Fediverse is still overwhelmingly a space by and for white Europeans and North Americans. We fall _very_ short of the diversity that the #Twitter of old had, and we should contemplate why.
Welcome Bluesky folks to Mastodon! 🎉 Happy to have you in the Fediverse. Explore, connect, and enjoy! 🌈 #bluesky #Mastodon
And if any new refugees from Bluesky need a bit of a cheer-up, that is what my newsfeed is for!

“a hallmark of a decentralized network is that there is no central authority that could actually do that”
tl;dr It’s only decentralized for people who don’t have their Bluesky accounts hosted with Bluesky.
Bluesky is not decentralized and they are the central authority. I host multiple accounts on my own Bluesky PDS server and yes, they can definitely ban users by just taking down their DID (personal identifier). I’ve done it before myself when I was deleting some unwanted accounts and got “account suspended” messages.
They can also shadow-ban people like me who don’t have their Bluesky account hosted on their network by just blacklisting our PDS domains. Our posts will still be seen across the AT Proto network but would not be visible by anyone on Bluesky. However, most all accounts are hosted by Bluesky at this time, so basically you’d be blocked from everyone.
