When I See People Use Snowclones, When Original Thought Is Right There
It's very depressing when I see someone say something and then a billion other people use the same template, so I realize it's a snowclone. It's even more disturbing when I see the same snowclone on Twitter and Bluesky, because that pretty much means there is a memetic vector between them. A snowclone is a clichéd phrase in which one or more words can be substituted to express a similar idea in a different context, often to humorous or sarcastic effect. For example, the Iraqi dictator Saddam Hussein's widely publicized phrase "the mother of all battles" in 1991 spawned such variations as "the mother of all traffic jams".[1] The term snowclone was coined in 2004, derived from journalistic clichés that referred to the number of Inuit words for snow.[2] Besides the obvious toxic vector, it implies no one has unique thoughts. Everyone is being driven by the same behavioral and linguistic patterns, so you're not really speaking to individual people but to nodes in a network of aggregate intelligence. Luckily, my brain picks up on snowclones quickly and creates an aversion to them. I won't know why I dislike it at first, and then it will click: oh yeah. The snowclone that has become a meme I am referring to is: when I see people use 'X' as a label, when 'Y' is right there. I have seen this snowclone being memetically spread. On Twitter, it is being used in pretty transphobic ways. This is an example: "pisses me off when I see people use 'non-binary' as a label, when 'theydy' is right there." I am seeing the same snowclones and memes on Twitter and now on Bluesky, which basically means they are operating on the same memeplex. So, Bluesky and Twitter are no longer distinguishable ontological and cultural spaces, since they are extensions of the same network now. It's very disappointing. At some point, I'll probably write ML programs and use them in conjunction with Gephi to locate and categorize the heuristic signatures of the malignant memetic viruses so I can intuitively recognize them. What got me thinking about this is a blackpill sour-grapes meme/snowclone floating around Bluesky. It's technically a memetic variation of the linguistic snowclone: "Yeah, sex is great, but have you ever [insert oddly specific, mundane, or deeply satisfying experience]?" It's a variation that enacts chronically online sour grapes about sex by dismissing sex in favor of a smaller, more achievable pleasure. When you trace the phylogenetics of that meme, you end up in blackpill ontological spaces. The problem is that since no one really has any intelligence of their own, anymore, and they are roughly a node in a larger one, no one reflects on what it connotes; rather, they virally mutate and then spread it further. I feel like all the people talking about all the things Mastodon needs to do to take the crown of the Everything Website away from Twitter / Bluesky don't really get the point of decentralization.
Mastodon is not one giant hellfeed designed to allow millions of people to harass and ragebait each other. Mastodon is a network of small communities that can talk to each other. It's always going to be a bit more personal than logging onto Twitter, because you're not joining Mastodon, you're joining a small community. And some of those small communities might have weird quirks or eccentricities that others don't. That's by design. This is not a single, one-size-fits-all platform.
Like, for example: I've seen people talk about how the lack of a proper search function on many instances is a sign that Mastodon devs are incompetent. But consider this: perhaps most instances don't opt in to universal search because we don't want random strangers butting into our replies because they keyword searched a hot button issue they want to argue about. Perhaps it's *not healthy* to have to monitor every single thing you write because you know that you are, at all times, exposed to the scrutiny of millions of people who you have never met and do not particularly want to. Maybe it's good to be able to move in small circles where you can relax your defenses and just talk to other people like a human being.
Mastodon isn't Bluesky / Twitter. It's not supposed to be. If you want to post to a centralized megafeed, you already have sites for that! And if you find that all those sites are shit, perhaps it's time to try something new.
