I'm not especially bothered about the quote boost feature in Mastodon. I've disabled quote reposts on Bluesky too. I found the edit feature and 10,000 character limit to be the real game changers.
Anyone can boost/repost my toots/posts, but if someone wants to comment, I want them to reply to my post, so I can respond directly in a conversation-style thread. I want a meaningful exchange of views, not TwiX-style meaningless shallow headline-style posts.
On other platforms, I've had people quote repost my posts to attack me. And then it's on their profile, with the focus on their comment about my post, rather than on my original post, and the replies on that thread will be from people who follow them and share their worldview, so replies slanted toward attacking and distorting the meaning of my original post.
I'm not keen on any feature on Mastodon & Fediverse where people stop communicating directly with each other, and instead forget that there's a real person behind the post, making it easier to think of groups of people as non-persons and easier to demonise.
I love the 10,000 character limit as I have enough characters to abide by the social niceties, saying "Hello Fred, hope you're well" and "Have a great week. Take care." It slows us down and stops us making ill-advised comments. It helps us remember that we are communicating with a real person with a central nervous system.
