Now you've elaborated, I do seem to remember quite a few people posting about #peertube - and #lemmy to a lesser extent.
I think there may be special issues with the way they use #ActivityPub but I hasten to add, I don't know the ins an outs of it well enough to say for sure.
It's interesting that #friendica works more or less perfectly though, despite being at least as complex as the others you mention.
I wonder if it's because it's far older, so everyone already knows how to allow for its quirks.
It's an interesting topic though - and obviously one I follow :)

the best way I saw #ActivityPub explained was as being like email protocols.
On the most basic level, text works, but the more complexity you add the more inconsistency you see.
For example, if you attach large files, some email providers will not deliver it. If you use some css some email services won't format it the same way.
And recently - well about a year ago - some yahoo accounts weren't able to receive some exchange emails.
We're all so used to this we don't even think about, but from what I've read it;'s the same issue at work with the #fediverse.
Because servers get so much freedom in how to operate, it breaks things for some users.
The social media we're used to is more homogeneous, but it wasn't always that way.
We used to have these issues with #nntp servers, where for example some servers refused to encapsulate #yenc messages correctly
It's not that #mastodon is the new way; it's just that we've forgotten the old way :)

Dumb question that I was always too afraid to ask:
I know how the #Fediverse and its federation works. It's intuitive and familiar to me; I mean, I even host my own instance.
But I never understood how interaction cross-software is supposed to work. In theory, I can use whatever #ActivityPub software I want and still interact with everyone else. But in practice that just... isn't the case, right?
I mean, for text it's quite simple: I write a short post on #Mastodon and people on #GoToSocial or #Misskey or whatever can see and read that same post and interact with it. They can see my profile and it appears on their instance in their style and with their features.
Even outside of microblogging I still get it. A super-long post on #Friendica or #Diaspora appears on my timeline, too. Their profiles might have more fields than I can see here, but that's fine.
But what's up beyond that?
I can see #Pixelfed posts here, converted into image galleries. But what about the other way 'round? If someone on Pixelfed follows my Mastodon account, they can't see any of my non-image posts, right?
What about #PeerTube and such niche software? I guess I could follow a PeerTube account as a microblogger and see their videos and descriptions in my timeline. Video comments are replies.
But the other way 'round? How are they supposed to interact with Friendica or Pixelfed users? PeerTube doesn't even have a "timeline".
Doesn't that feature disparity undermine the whole idea of the #Fediverse or am I missing something?

I just realized that the default specifications for ActivityPub/ActivityStreams do not have a way to perform an update on an object's ID. (ie, moving it from example.com/1 -> example.com/2)
An Update activity does not allow ID updates because it would lose the reference to the original one. (It can be massaged by using an Origin property, but I don't like that).
Another option would be to use a Move activity (which is defined as moving objects between collections), where the Origin property is the object itself instead of a collection. (I like this behaviour better, as it requires less divergence from the spec)

Ich lese bei @stefanpfeiffer.blog schon länger mit, als ich mich erinnern kann. Grund dafür ist unsere Schicksalsgemeinschaft. Denn sein FohlenTicker, ist als Ergänzung zu meiner Stammquelle „Seitenwahl“, meine beste Verbindung zum Leid (hauptsächlich) und Freud (eher selten) der einzig wahren Borussia. Dass er nebenbei auch noch über weit mehr als das bloggt, nehme ich als Benefit gerne mit…
Stefans offenes Bekenntnis dazu, auch weiterhin Meta als Multiplikator seines Blogs zu nutzen, respektiere ich. Auch wenn es jede Menge Grund dafür gibt, diese Entscheidung zu kritisieren. Aber das überlasse ich gerne anderen. Mir steht das nicht zu, denke ich.
Meine „Ergänzung“ zu Stefans Beitrag ist viel mehr, dass der Grund „Reichweite“ sozusagen als sowas wie die Generalabsolution von allen benutzt wird, die sich die Arbeit nicht machen wollen – oder objektiv aus Mangel an Ressourcen, nicht machen können, dabei denke ich an manch unterbesetztes Social-Media-Team – auf anderen „Plattformen“ eine neue „Reichweite“ aufzubauen. Also quasi mit nichts mehr als einem Handtuch im Gepäck auf einem anderen Planeten ein neues Leben aufzubauen.
Ich habe da eine komplett andere Perspektive. Und das liegt daran, dass ich mit meinem Blog @mediathekperlen nie auf irgendeiner Social-Media-Plattform vertreten war. Das Ding wurde von Anfang an nur für das Fediverse gebaut. Und obwohl es auf der Blog-Software WordPress läuft, hat es inzwischen mehr Reichweite (2.200+), als jedes meiner zahlreichen anderen Blogs jemals vorher – völlig egal, in welchem asozialen Netzwerk ich deren Links geteilt habe.
Mehr geht immer, klar! Aber wenn Bots und Fakeprofile wegfallen, dann schrumpft die Zahl der Follows vermutlich auch auf den datenkapitalistischen Plattformen signifikant. Und 2.200+ echte Menschen sind dann schon eine erhebliche Zielgruppe, von der ich nicht geahnt hätte, sie im Fediverse erreichen zu können, als ich mit dem Projekt begonnen habe…
Am Ende zählen aber nicht die Anzahl der Follows, sondern die Anzahl und die Qualität der Interaktionen. Für die Blogger:innen der alten Schule: die Anzahl der Kommentare / Pingbacks im Blog. Denn was ist ein „Like“ auf Facebook/Insta/X, wenn es nicht in den Blog zurückkommt, sondern nur bei Zuckerberg et al. existiert? Und was ist ein Kommentar, wenn er nur in meinem Blog lesbar ist – für die ganz wenigen Leser:innen, die in einem Beitrag überhaupt weit genug runterscrollen, um sie zu sehen?
Wenn alles für alle überall zugänglich ist, um damit zu interagieren, erst dann entwickelt sich daraus auch so etwas wie eine Community. Hashtags und Gruppen tragen es noch weiter über die eigenen Follows hinaus, Reposts (die wertvollste Interaktion überhaupt) potentieren es nochmal.
Es hat rund zwei Jahre gedauert, bis dass der Mediathekperlen-Blog aus sich heraus organisch exponentiell gewachsen ist. Noch zu Weihnachten 2024 lag die Zahl meiner Follower:innen bei rund 500 Accounts. Ein Jahr vorher waren es nur 160… und wenn ich hochrechnen soll, dann wäre es nicht gänzlich unwahrscheinlich, dass es zu Weihnachten 2025 schon mehr als 3.000 sind.
Hätte mir das eine:r vor drei Jahren so vorhergesagt, dann hätte ich wohl gesagt „Du spinnst doch…!“
Ich habe mich schon etwas schwergetan, mich vom Usenet zu verabschieden, MySpace und StudiDingens habe ich ausgelassen. Facebook und Twitter habe ich eh‘ nur als Linkschleuder für politische Kampagnen genutzt, die waren aber irgendwann vorüber und ich war wieder weg. LinkedIn hatte ich auch – als es gehackt wurde, habe ich drauf verzichtet. Im Fediverse bin ich schon seit 2018… aber richtig angekommen bin ich erst, seit mein Blog „ActivityPub“ versteht.

Journalists are well aware that if Instagram, X, FB and other social media companies 'go away' it will break their journalistic activities as it is where people are that they need to connect to.
Its not their fault, its not the users fault, the problem is with the technocrats that made it so and everyone followed.
In fact, we don't need to wait for Insta to fail. More often than not, folks get their account suspended through no fault of their own by a stupid bot, for it to take them possibly days, weeks or more to appeal the decision. Mean time they are unnable to do their jobs. Unable to generate income.
#fediverse #activitypub #nostr #bsky are likely the only real alternatives that, in effect, few are using to the tyranny of social media overlords
This is why it is so important to talk to others about the #fediverse and publish content / provide solutions that help more people use it.
