As a new, very green, very basic sysadmin, something missing from the manual vs. let’s ask a LLM mode is… the human element.
Aside from ethical considerations (environmental costs, stolen training data, erosion of skills and critical thinking), I will always choose “manual mode.” Why? I love receiving tech advice from people on the Fediverse.
I will forever remember that it’s @ilja who encouraged me to start self-hosting with #YunoHost.
I first heard about #FreeBSD from @stefano
Earlier this week I learned about #tmux from @teapot_ben and @drfyzziks
Today @antoine_ali helped me get this GoToSocial instance to federate again by restarting dnsmasq.
I know if I run into issues I can just shoot a DM to my tech mentors @stereo and @jan

I've been using #yunohost for a few months to #selfhost many apps.
Overall, I find it pretty cool for personal use.
But for more serious projects, I would feel better using #docker containers.
I've consider switching to #cloudron , but I don't see myself subscribing to a closed source software. On the long term at least.
I recently found #coolify and it looks interesting. I might give it a try.

I would recommand a #yunohost + #nextcloud app on a raspberry 5 with an external ssd and an hdd to another computer for backups.
If multiple members of the family want to join and have there own home, i would recommand to acquire each a raspberry pi and do ciphered backups using borg apps to othet member of family.

Kleines Update bzgl. meines Servers und somit meiner Peertube Instanz.
Ich kann einen kleinen Fortschritt vermelden. Ich habe es geschafft dass mein Server und meine Fritzbox wieder miteinander reden.
Allerdings hält das nur bis zum nächsten Neustart des Servers da dieser beim Neustart die Ethernetschnittstelle im State "Down" belässt.
Ich kann die Schnittstelle nur online kriegen wenn ich in der CLI des Servers den Befehl "sudo dhclient" ausführe.

J’ai installé une instance #Mastodon sur vieil ordinateur avec #Yunohost .
L’instance ne peut-être vue par les autres instances et je ne peux pas voir d’autres instances, seulement l’autre compte sur la même instance.
Je crois comprendre que ce serait parce que j’ai utilisé au départ un domaine fourni par Yunohost (en .ynh.fr) pour ensuite changer pour un autre domaine que j’avais.
Comment puis-je repartir en neuf? Avez-vous des pistes de solutions?

Koukám, že #Yunohost si dělá automaticky full backup aplikací při updatu na novější verzi, jsou hodní, ale jednak mám na zálohy separé disk a yunohost mi to sype na systémové NVMe, kde to fakt nechci a druhak mi v tom pak dělají bordel, když koukám, že mám najednou 24GB pryč 😁 #selfhosting

I was finally able to upgrade my #YunoHost #PeerTube installation (thanks to the advice of Fedi people).
Long story short, yesterday I tried to upgrade using YunoHost's graphical user interface but I lost the connection to the server, my PeerTube installation broke and was automatically removed from my list of apps. I could restore to the pre-update backup but my PeerTube site was still broken, showing a "welcome to nginx" message. Thankfully I had taken a snapshot of my VPS, so I was able to restore everything within a few minutes.
Following my accounts of what happened, @teapot_ben and @drfyzziks recommended I install tmux and do app upgrades from terminal, inside tmux, so that server connection issues wouldn't interfere with app upgrades. So I did. And this time everything worked! (huge sigh of relief)
It's so much fun upgrading YunoHost apps from Terminal. I think this will be the way for me from now on 🤗

This newbie #sysadmin is VERY HAPPY because in less than 5 minutes I:
installed tmux (thank you for the recommendation & instructions @teapot_ben and @drfyzziks)
upgraded PeerTube from Terminal using tmux
now the stakes weren't super high because I did this for my second VPS which is running test apps... the real challenge will be to do this on my primary VPS and my in-production PeerTube instance.
Grabbing another coffee, taking a VPS snapshot and trying this.
As always THANK YOU FOR YOUR SUPPORT AND ENCOURAGEMENT. I couldn't do this without you 💖
Oh but the larger point in this message was to vouch for tmux - it really is super beginner friendly. I know NOTHING and I was able to easily install it and use it. So you could recommend it to your normie friends for sure ☺️

Überraschung am Morgen. Das Letsencrypt Zertifikat für meine Website https://pixelgalaxy.net war abgelaufen und wurde nicht automatisch erneuert. Die Pixelfed Instanz läuft auf einem Server mit Yunohost. Da hat Yunohost wieder Eigenheiten entwickelt, die einem nicht gefallen können. Das Verzeichnis für die Zertifikate in der NGINX-Konfiguration war falsch eingetragen. Damit mußte die Challenge natürlich scheitern.
Problem gefixt! PixelGalaxy.NET läuft wieder.
