WordPress hacking
A friend of mine got a WordPress blog with a multi-language plugin (qTranslate-X). He needed help as that plugin isn’t maintained anymore and was giving him grief after he had to update WordPress and his PHP version. I looked into it and at first contemplated writing a conversion tool to a newer, supported plugin. That was a suggestion from Perplexity.ai. Was fiddling with a local test environment and had Claude code helping with coding and debugging. But the results were not good enough to do it in production. The plugin had also altered parts of the theme he was using and the newer plugins were not compatible with that.
Eventually I was about to fix the old plugin with Claude code to make it compatible with the newer PHP. While researching the options here I found out that someone actually forked the original plugin and is still maintaining it. So the solution was to use just that newer forked plugin and no further fiddling was required. It just worked 🙂
Still spend a good chunk of time on the weekend exploring all the other paths. Friend is happy now with his working again blog. That’s the most important part.
NAS Upgrade
I have a quite old Synology NAS at home (DS416play) . 4 bays with 4 disks. Using it mainly as an NFS server for my linux server. But it’s utterly slow. I could barely get 1 MB/s of transfer speed. Loggin in to the Web UI was also almost impossible as the thing is so slow that the 2FA would time out during login often times.
I researched what options i might have. Disabled all additional software and services on the devices. Complete Reinstall? Hard to back up the 6TB I have on it. Especially giving the slow transfer speed. Installing an alternative operating system? Maybe…
Eventually I found a blog post speaking of upgrading the RAM on the device. The default 1GB is not enough anymore, but can be upgraded with standard memory modules. I ordered an 8GB stick, watched a tear down video and did the upgrade.
When I started up the device again and tried to get to the UI I was already surprised that the UI was rather snappy now. Logged me in immediately. Then I did a transfer test from my Linux machine and was able to max out the network interface at about 200 MB/s.
I was seldomly more happy about such an affordable hardware upgrade. I should have figued this much earlier… the NAS was at the brink of getting kicked out because of swapping.
MeshCore
got mesh core working with the correct radio profile. Apparently the Berlin community has settled on the “EU/UK Narrow” radio profile. Seeing quite some repeaters now and also receiving occasional messages on the public channel. Flashed my other two nodes in Berlin also to MeshCore and made them a repeater node and a room server. Still not too happy with message transfer in the city. It seems spotty at best to me. Needs further testing and fiddling.
3D Printing
I printed a small case for the XIAO nRF52840 & Wio-SX1262 kit. That’s serving as a MeshCore Room server now. Doesn’t have a battery, but is at least somehow protected against disassembly.
Dachfenster
getting quotes for installing the roof windows in #project25. If all works out we might have a bit more light in the attic this fall. Then we can start with the buildout of the attic.
