Drei Mal haben wir beschlossen, dass wir als Messenger nicht #WhatsApp, sondern #Signal nehmen wollen. Gestern, als es darum ging, die Gruppe einzurichten, ist es – abrakaschwuppdichmirdochwurscht – WhatsApp geworden. Grund: Terminabsprachen per Poll.
Ich verstehe nur nicht, was daran einfacher sein soll, wenn irgendjemand das alles einzeln herauskopieren, in eine #Mail kopieren und mir schicken muss.

Is privacy only for a paranoid few?
I believe that users who depend only on Gmail and WhatsApp are happier and have greater peace of mind. These apps just work. If it does not work, the user will limit their worries to local issues such as network or sim card. They do not care whether their data is being used for advertising or training language models. The apps are used, as a basic user, with no questions asked. They may hardly avail customer support of Gmail or WhatsApp. They never read privacy policies and do not worry about metadata (who, when, how often), Perfect Forward Secrecy, Post Quantum Cryptography etc. Even a data breach may not scare them. Privacy conscious users call them normies [1].
Tuta, Proton, Mailbox, Posteo et. offer much better privacy than Gmail. Secria is offering post-quantum secure email since 2025. These service providers would be having less than ten percent of Gmail active users (~ 1.8 billion). How many users of Gmail have been affected due to this lack of privacy of Gmail? — none in my opinion. Google has firmly denied claims of a recent massive Gmail data breach affecting 183 million user accounts, stating that the reports are false and misleading [2]. Gmail's privacy issues are policy based.
Gmail's ~ 1.8 billion active users may not worry about WhatsApp's privacy gripes - metadata sharing with Meta and backups on Google Drive. Signal's ~ 40-100M users = ~ 3% of Gmail. WhatsApp's end-to-end encryption is more about branding and less about privacy. The ~ 3 billion active users of WhatsApp could not make the ~ 1.8 billion active Gmail users more privacy conscious. I guess that most of the Gmail users will also be WhatsApp users. A tiny fraction of WhatsApp users may genuinely be more privacy-conscious but not enough to make a dent in Gmail usage.
