I personally like gnome on my tv in the main room that I don't really want to be a dedicated "media" station. Gnome allows me to have a nice tablet like interface, browse the internet, use mpv but also do things like ssh into a server or post this message using Ferdium.

Don't hate on gnome folks, it still has a place for many use cases.

Did you know you can #selfhost a #fishtank on your #Linux server and then #SSH into it?

Since #guix 1.5, it is possible now to both:

- pull from a private channel using a channels.scm with

(url "git@git.sr.ht:~user/repository")

- likewise, build packages obtaining its sources from a private repository

Of course, user authentifies with the git repositories exchanging #ssh keys, so a keygen manager helps to retain passwords.

The orange site shared this link, telnet.org which has a list of servers to which you can connect over Telnet. (Warning: these are always unencrypted connections).

If you want a Telnet-like experience but over a secure #TLS connection (e.g. using an #SSH client), check out the “Tildeverse,” https://tildeverse.org/ , a list of public-access servers with SSH login. It is like the #Fediverse but using TLS rather than the #ActivityPub protocol. The obvious drawback is that you need to know how to use a command line, but I doubt that would bother most Fediverse dwellers.

@screwlisp I didn’t see https://lambda.moo.mud.org at all in this list of Telnet logins. We may need to do something about that.

I finally got that out of my head :meowbongo:

SSH Certificates!
:ablobcatbounce:

* every
* host has a ssh host-cert
* clients have the host-cert pubkey added at the system level, no more worrying about known hosts/trustonfirstuse
* the above is achieved via a simple ansible playbook if I add more hosts
* user certs can be obtained via cli command that calls OIDC or uses device flow
* Forgejo trusts the user CA, any user with access to git via the above can push to forgejo
* I created an entirely offline ssh backup CA, and added it's user CA to each host, I can dust off the key and make a temp ssh cert if needed in case everything else eats shit

This was entirely unnecessary, the user count is low, number of hosts is low, and I had to keep backup paths around to deal with edge cases anyway (such as network devices not being to trust a user CA, as one example)

but it was a neat distraction, and most importantly kept the horrors from bothering me for a few days
