The US government's Department of Homeland Security has asked social media companies for information about users who post content critical of ICE. This is happening while some people report that anti-ICE content is being limited online. There are worries about free speech and how people can share their views.

Over the last few months, I've noticed some things on #Mastodon that have been affecting me personally even if I'm not involved.

If I see a post's comments, and the OP calls out some posts and still manages to have a respectful conversation with those people and resolve the matter, I think the OP is a mature person.

But if the OP seemingly calls out various comments she thinks are "tangential" or "not contributing" correctly enough to her liking or policing what replies are relevant to the conversation or not (even if they actually are), I either assume that the OP is gatekeeping or just being dismissive and exclusionary, especially if the commenter doesn't appear to have any bad intentions or vibes. I may eventually end up muting the OP if there is a known pattern of this in a way that is more unconstructive than not.

I base this on how they write using specific keywords, phrases, implied emotion, etc. Not arbitrary biases or prejudices.

Anyway, I find it weird some people complain about tone policing from others but somehow their own version of conversational policing is OK.

I wonder if I am being too overly sensitive about this?

Am I alone?

Writing in the FT, Pepe Torres suggests three trivial (yet ubiquitous) developments have robbed us of our humanity:

1. Tough mobile phone cases - we can ignore consequences (all our data is safe even if we drop the phone);

2. Infinite scroll - meaning looking for information has no real end;

3. the five-starred review - we have outsourced our judgement with the effect of steady homogenistaion of experience(s).

On one level, its over-wrought, but on another I see his point!

Manche #Kapitalistenschweine haben den Strom preiswerter gemacht und die Grundgebühr heftig angehoben. Kleinere und sparsame Haushalte legen drauf.

to elaborate on second point: such community-driven organising, like it was in Taiwan in the wake of Covid & CCP propaganda in the face of vTaiwan & g0v, is something large social media companies don't want to happen precisely because that strips them of controlling the information flow

Frauen können abgrundtief gefährlich und böse sein! 😳
