Why it matters:
These verdicts make clear that platforms built to hook kids face real consequences — a win for parents, regulators, and anyone who thinks profits shouldn’t come at kids’ mental health.

Here's a tip to avoid or break social-media addiction on the big commercial sites:

Read only posts by people you follow, about people you follow.

Skip all the so-called "viral" stuff that commercial sites force into your feed. Skip all the links your friends were tricked into sharing.

Read only posts they've written in their own voice, and photos or videos they took themselves. Unfollow anyone posting AI-generated content. Get your news headlines somewhere else (like the news orgs' websites or RSS feeds).

These companies are spending hundreds of billions of dollars figuring out how to keep you addicted, so it's an uphill battle. It's ok to get counselling if it's too hard to do on your own. Best of luck! 💪

p.s. "People you follow" can also mean via groups or hashtags.

What is up with all of these insanely long titles? They're just as lengthy as the article itself.

Obviously, it shows just how little interest people have nowadays in reading. They'll even have AI create a summary for them. It's sad. People make me sad. 🫤

An LA Court's ruling on Meta and Google exposes the real causes of online harms.

Engagement-driven design and data-fuelled advertising business models put people at risk.

Yet the UK government's approach to online safety has focussed on keeping kids out and locking adults in to toxic platforms.

The UK government is stuck treating the symptoms, not the root cause of online harms.

Nothing changes until we break the business model that drives hate and extremism; the harvesting of our data to maximise engagement and fuel advertising.

It's time to #BreakBigTech.
