Okay so I still see people complain about how Fedi is bad because it's algorithm is just a simple "Here's the newest post. That's it."
I could see a use for an algorithm, but I would argue that Fedi doesn't need one and here's why.
When you create a fedi account, part of the way that the Join Mastodon website is set up is that you're able to find an instance that suits your interests. You go there and then you have access to their local timeline which should have at least some people talking about the things that interest them or aspects about their life that made them go with that instance.
For example I joined Girlcock at one point to interact with fellow trans women and I was once on Neurodifferent.me because I'm autistic. I'm sure there's a lot of other stuff going on in this head of mine. Like, washing your hands between touching your last tomato and your last potatoes that you're going to serve as part of a single meal because you're afraid of cross contamination and food poisoning your roommate when you're the only one who's going to eat it is totally a normal thing that people worry about.
I consider this to be similar to how things used to be. You wanted to talk about Transformers with a bunch of Transformers fans, you go to the Seibertron, TFArchive, Transfandom, TFW2005, and/or Allspark forums. (With the exception of Transfandom, all of those are still up!) Or if you were into Sonic you'd go to like... Sonic Retro, SEGA forums, and/or Sonic Stadium. Okay I know there's more. I was part of a few forums but I never got as into the Sonic forum scene as much as I did the Transformers forum scene. (SEGA forums is gone now. I would say I miss it but it was honestly pretty toxic.)
Difference is, unlike forums, you still have similar kinds of convenience that you would on a generalized social media website. Not saying that you were required to only post about Transformers on a Transformers forum, but here it's a lot easier to branch out and still have access to the community you branched around yourself. Like, I still talk about being trans and autistic or whatever the heck and I still get what I consider better engagement here than I ever did on Twitter or Tumblr.
When I embraced the idea that I could join an instance for a specific reason it freed me up to have what I feel is a much more organic relationship with talking to people.
I understand that doesn't necessarily work for everyone, but I feel like we've gotten so hung up on the way that big corporations do things that we've forgotten that there have always been alternative ways to building community on the internet.
I realize Fedi has a Twitter-like thing going on, but I wish people would try to look at what it is rather than what it isn't.

The Register: Social media users rubbish at spotting sneaky ads, say boffins. “Boffins have peered deep into the eyes of social media users and come to the conclusion that they’re not great at spotting when an influencer is trying to sell them something. Yet when they do, they’re not exactly fond of the experience – and regulations requiring disclaimers on sponsored content don’t seem to be […]

Mashable: The unseen risks creators face when they get political. “For creators, silence can be strategic. Speaking out on politics can alienate followers, trigger harassment, and scare off brand deals that pay the bills. But silence carries its own cost: missing the engagement that comes with topical discourse, feeling complicit in injustice, or losing the trust of an audience. This is one of […]
