#Valve ain't saints, but #Steam is the de-facto #monopoly in #Gaming because they are the #Amazon of Digital Games, and #GabeN knew to hire the right folks to turn a #DRM that was hated into a #Store and #SocialMedia others love!

So heads up, you all might need to expect another incoming Twitter Exodus...

They plan to completely replace the recommendation system with Grok - making it depend fully on AI. 😬

We asked teens to pick if videos were real or AI. They weren't very good at it
By Cale Matthews and Nicholas Maher

BTN High puts teenagers to the test to see if they can spot if videos are fake or real. It was harder than the high schoolers thought.

Content warning:notes about socializing - rather cynical ones, actually (very long, 1/2)

Weird social things to note...

Many of my cohort now are completely off of #SocialMedia , and it's easy to see why. I don't think that "social media" has anything to do with it, really, as a concept - it's more just...people. Wife1 signed me up for Nextdoor, which is a neighborhood mailing list, so people in the neighborhood post what they wish. And I kind of wish I wasn't on there, because I see that. Sure, there are some useful things ("Police activity at this street", "Hi, I'm a kindergarten teacher looking for school supply donations"), but also a lot of fear, suspicion, failures to think critically, grousing and complaining, and just blather. I lost my password on that service almost immediately, and I have never particularly wanted to recover it.

I also realize that I'm in one of the most educated and affluent locations in the entire U.S. It's profoundly disturbing that this is as good as it is likely to be out there. #socializing #PeopleWhatAConcept

For a while I ran a #forum and tried to get people to join; I ended up with only two friends who were regulars. Granted it was only a general #discussion space, so I guess it just never reached critical mass, but it was kind of amazing how much it was avoided by everyone I knew. I had hoped to have more enlightening social contact.

There were forum promotion groups out there, so I met a lot of people who were also running them. Many were older, but not all...and the conversation was - bizarre. It was like being in the kitchen of the worst party you've ever attended. Constant clumsy attempts at engagement: "What's your favorite donut?" and so on. I had a number of people complain that my forums didn't have a specific "welcome" forum for new members, which I didn't think was necessary because there were many topics to choose from and one could simply introduce one's self in one of those, or write the details you wished to present on your easily-accessed profile, which, mind you, was the actual point of having a profile. But people clamored for it, so I gave in. And people would introduce themselves, perfunctorily; other people would say "Hi!" or something in return, and that was the entire thread. I still do not understand the point.

( @cmdr_nova has a forum, IIRC, and I should almost certainly get a login there, as the foregoing is exceedingly unlikely to happen. I could invite my two friends from my forum, perhaps - with her permission.)
