I've settled (finally) on a use for my RPi4: FreedomBox for self-hosting/media server. Anything beyond the capabilities of that can be offloaded to another machine waiting for a use, but the hardware seems more powerful than their recommended setup.

Finally started setting up the current railway layout in JMRI. It has some good points, like automatically registering points when they are set, and all the Digitrax block detection sensors when the track is turned on. Had to register the reverse polarity blocks manually.

However even on a Raspberry Pi 5 the UI is terribly unresponsive - laggy, to the point of almost being unusable. Which makes actually creating and labelling the layout a very painful and error-prone process. I can reduce the problem by reducing the size of the panel editor window but it’s not great.

I can see the GPU getting hammered. Wondering how much is having a large display (27” 4k) and how much is the probably quite old Java GUI code. Oh, and I can’t seem to choose a resolution for the Pi to use, it just defaults to the panel’s native resolution.

I am using #Yunohost as well! - I have an instance operating on #OracleCloud and one running on a #RaspberryPi - I have also spun up #Proxmox beacause I would like to do something more modular using containers so that I can keep the applications a little more independently managed (I like Yunohosts' integrated approach - But I'm looking at #CoopClould.

Our old Chromecast is beginning to act up, and it's been bugging me. This morning I had the idea that maybe my old Raspberry Pi could act as replacement.

Apparently there's ways to get that working, so here's me hoping that the 2b model is at least an equivalent to a gen1/gen2 Chromecast.
