When free and open-source software cannot even come close to the user experience of non-free proprietary big tech software, it will remain an irrelevant niche for masochists.
I’m not blaming anyone. I’m well aware of the funding issues for free and open-source software. But that’s my impression after roughly 15 minutes (which are crucial for new users).
It’s sad, but I won’t mention (much less recommend) #Pixelfed to anyone in the foreseeable future. See you in 2027!

Well, let’s see if I can do what I want using the #Pixelfed app on Android.
Downloaded it, logged in to my instance, tried to post a picture – oh, there’s no option to crop it.
That’s the point where 99% of the people looking for an alternative to Instagram would have given up.
That’s the point where I gave up.
For the average person, this is unusable. I’ll keep my account on gram.social, but I don’t think I’ll check if I can crop a picture without issues before next year.

What’s the first thing a new #Pixelfed user would do? Post a picture, I guess. So that’s what I tried (from the browser on my phone).
I uploaded the picture. But when I tried to crop it to a square, it was rotated by 90 degrees. Tried several times, but couldn’t get it to work.

I tried again with Chrome, the favourite browser of everyone who wants to get away from big tech 😏 Same issue.
