I've been dropping subscriptions with large corporations and finding alternatives of late. I am amazed at the amount of music available through streaming services like #somafm , #8ballradio , and of course #livemusicarchive. What are your favorites?
And what will it take for content makers to shift from #youtube to #peertube ?
I know, these are all individual choices that probably don't make for necessary change.
But for the moment, it feels like small victories over #enshitification .
I used a post on the upcoming YouTube blackout as an oppurtunity to suggest video makers switch to PeerTube. I'm going to double down on degoogling.
I've been made aware of a modified #PeerTube instance that pulls in videos, then displays them as if they and the users who uploaded them were local to the instance. Not even providing redundancy, just pulling from the original source.

If such an overt faking of user counts wasn't bad enough, it's also billed as a "Web3 entertainment platform" which seems to have plans to introduce elements of gambling through a firm registered in Curacao.
As far as I can tell, they are just using the standard PeerTube federation API to get access to videos, so denying their access via instance settings should be a good first step to prevent your users from unknowingly supporting a crypto bro venture, but it won't remove already forwarded videos from their database. I am currently working on further ideas for mitigation.
