On the relation of software to culture and art:
Software developers like to call themselves "engineers". This conveys an air of objectivity, technical expertise and hard science credibility (and salary?).
And ofcourse there *is* a basis to that claim. Lots of "rules" to follow before something interesting is created.
But the essence of any software creation is a cultural construct. As capricious and arbitrary as any movement in literature, cinema, painting or fashion...
