The Python Software Foundation (PSF) applied for an important NSF grant and obtained it, *except that* the NSF imposed them impossible conditions with respect to diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI), such that the PSF had to eventually decline the grant.

I am not involved with the PSF, but I am involved in several open source software projects. But I am speaking for myself in this message. I strongly believe that as open source maintainers, DEI is at the core of our values. Our code is not our main project. Our community is. As far as I am concerned, I don't give my free time in the pursuit of the perfect open source software, I give it to empower people to do their own things with the code I wrote, to allow them to leverage the skills I used to write the code, and to enable them to contribute back, to build something better together.
If you are part of an open source software project, if it is not already done, please consider starting a collective discussion with the other project members on what you would have done if you were the PSF, and on what you will do if/when this happens to your project, so that you don't have to take a hard decision in a hurry. Please also consider using your project's visibility to make a public statement, as I am advocating in the open source projects that I am involved with. I am hoping for a large unified front from the open source community.
Open source software is one of the largest collective enterprises of humanity, and benefits all of us. It is bigger than any country, it is bigger than politics. This is not about taking a political side, this is about fighting for what we are, which is directly under attack.
