Microsoft schorst accounts van ontwikkelaars WireGuard en VeraCrypt

Microsoft heeft de accounts van de ontwikkelaars van vpn-software WireGuard en encryptiesoftware VeraCrypt geschorst, waardoor die geen nieuwe updates kunnen uitbrengen. Een reden waarom de accounts zijn geschorst is niet door Microsoft gegeven, zo hebben de ontwikkelaars zelf bekendgemaakt. VeraCrypt is een opensource-encryptieprogramma gebaseerd op het populaire TrueCrypt, waarvan de ondersteuning in 2014 werd gestopt. Het wordt ontwikkeld door één ontwikkelaar, Mounir Idrassi.
Een aantal dagen geleden liet Idrassi weten dat Microsoft zijn account had uitgeschakeld dat hij gebruikt voor het signeren van Windows-drivers en de bootloader waar VeraCrypt gebruik van maakt. Het account is nodig om updates voor VeraCrypt uit te kunnen brengen. Idrassi voegt toe dat hij hier niet door Microsoft over is ingelicht en ook niet weet waarom dit is gedaan. De VeraCrypt-ontwikkelaar zegt dat hij geprobeerd heeft om met Microsoft in contact te komen, maar dat het niet gelukt is om een mens te spreken. Volgens Idrassi heeft het verlies van zijn account naast VeraCrypt ook gevolgen voor zijn dagelijkse werk.

Earlier last month we wrapped two days at the Global Portable Memory Workshop in Seattle. The room was full of people who get it: if portable, user-controlled memory consolidates inside closed platforms, users lose. We need open infrastructure for the AI era, the same way Linux and open protocols built the web.

Anthropic pointed Claude Code at Linux kernel source files one at a time, framed as a security puzzle. It found a heap overflow in NFS code hiding since March 2003. Four more kernel bugs followed. 500+ validated vulnerabilities in weeks. Linux Foundation set aside $12.5M to help maintainers cope. Nobody found a volunteer to maintain a Google Drive library for 3.5 years. The bottleneck was never the bugs.

ZhipuAI ran GLM-5.1 on a vector database optimization problem and let it go for 600 iterations. It did not run out of ideas. At iteration 50 it was sitting at roughly the same performance as the best single-session result any model had achieved. By iteration 600 it had reached 21,500 queries per second. The previous best was 3,547.
