This message can be decrypted - is a very annoying thing. But #Fractal is so nice, that I would choose #Matrix over everything anytime.
Did anyone force family members to use the matrix over other IM in their families? Experience? (Multimedia etc)
People yelling about how you should move from #signal to #simplex or #matrix (or some other deeply obscure alternative) because of #chatcontrol seem to not be too informed on what the implications of the legislation could (and likely would) be.
Whittaker's statement that Signal would exit the EU (likely something that tech savvy users can circumvent in some not-even-all-that-clever ways) is not made lightly. SimpleX have said that they will "comply with applicable laws", which means either break encryption or leave the EU. And considering breaking encryption isn't feasible for them, so guess what's left.
I can't find any specific statements by Element regarding what (if anything) they plan to do in case this legislation passes. But my bet would be they don't have any different options than the rest.

Agreed. The "privacy vs. safety" dichotomy overlooks a critical point: child protection organizations often oppose broad chat monitoring not out of indifference to safety, but because ineffective #surveillance measures create collateral damage without solving the problem.
For example, the Internet Watch Foundation’s own data highlights that the vast majority of CSAM spreads through unencrypted platforms (e.g., mainstream #socialmedia, file-sharing services), while end-to-end encrypted tools like #Matrix are rarely the primary vectors.
Undermining #encryption for everyone fails to address the actual sources of harm—yet it reliably endangers vulnerable groups who depend on secure communication.
There are better ways forward:
- Client-side detection (e.g., privacy-preserving hashing for known illegal material)
- Decentralized moderation (e.g., Mastodon’s reporting systems + server-level enforcement)
- Targeted legal action (warrant-based investigations, not mass scanning)
The Fediverse demonstrates daily that safety and privacy aren’t mutually exclusive —but it requires focusing on what actually works, not what sounds tough in a headline.
@flancian i'd like to see the score for #matrix added-i'm guessing it's somewhere in the middle
Modern #AI
Never in the field of #IT trend-chasing is so much owed by so many blind devotees to so simple an operation: #matrix multiplication.
Uhh, is @matrix working for anyone?
My messages aren't sending and time out on both #element web and EXA.
Reloading element web turns them into the classic Unable to decrypt message which means they're probably lost forever.
(Why I can't decrypt a message that I never even sent and should therefore still be stuck in a local queue somewhere is a mystery to me.)
Edit: Appears to be working again?
In wie weit ist das Matrix-Protokoll und die ganzen Apps wie Element bei dieser #Chatkontrolle betroffen?
