Services like #proton and #signal are a sort of signpost of alternate organization of things, but after decades of activism it's pretty clear that #dataprivacy alone can only nudge people so far. And in any case it does not apply to public services like #mastodon, despite the incoherent emotions of various groups around here.
In a nutshell, the future we want still needs to be invented. It will be real, deep innovation, at social, technical and economic level.

Picking a #Mastodon server by interest is a lot better than a general purpose one with a higher population.
At times I'm annoyed by the lack of local engagement--tech people are notoriously introverted and deeply interest-based to the exclusion of social interactions outside those interests (I'm guilty; hello fellow NDs). But the local tab on popular servers is a barrage of BS, even with filters applied.
As with RL, some small towns are better than big cities.

Mir war schon in Diskussionen um die EU-Kommissionspräsidentin Ursula #vonderLeyen aufgefallen, dass leider viele sich für "aufgeklärt" und "progressiv" Haltende gegenüber Politikerinnen und insbesondere Christdemokratinnen sexistisch werden. Höhnische Namensverkleinerungen schaden dabei nur, weil sie von den Sachthemen ablenken.
Deswegen entfolge ich inzwischen konsequent Accounts, die darauf beharren, Politikerinnen persönlich erniedrigen zu wollen.
So frauenfeindlich sollten m.E. #Mastodon & das #Fediverse nicht länger sein.
