Mastodons were extinct, elephant-like mammals that lived in North and Central America from the late Miocene to the early Holocene, with the American mastodon ( Mammut americanum) being the most well-known species.They were shorter and stockier than mammoths, with a lower, flatter skull and shorter legs.
