I woke up this morning to #mastodon being down so immediately alerted my system administrator (me). Turns out Postgres had updated to 18 overnight which uses a new mount point in the docker image. Fortunately some kind soul mentioned this on my timeline a few days ago so I knew where to look. My compose file didn't have a tag set so I just set it to 17 and prayed. All working again now! I'll have to do a manual upgrade soon.

I don't understand ... I thought my home feed was just accounts I followed, maybe local to my server accounts too. My home feed has been full of trash that I'm like, why did I ever follow this account? But then I click to look at the account page, and I'm not following them ... and they aren't a newsie.social either.
Did something change? Or have I just always been wrong and confused about my "home" feed?

The biggest struggle with getting people to embrace decentralized social media alternatives is probably disabusing them of the notion that it's natural to not have to put any effort into learning how technology works to use it.
And yeah, sure, if you've only been using Bluesky and Facebook for your entire internet habitation, switching to Mastodon might be weird and frustrating for a few hours. That's normal. That's what learning new skills is like. Weird and frustrating.
Like, last year I learned video editing, 3D modeling, and modding for a few very different games. *None* of that shit came easily. It was absurdly frustrating. And it kept being frustrating. And then eventually it got a little less frustrating and I realized I actually knew what I was doing. Learning new shit is hard, especially as an adult. Sometimes you just need to bash your head against a wall until the wall gives in to your sheer stubbornness. Is that an appealing concept? Fuck no! But taking the path of least resistance at every opportunity is how we got to the point where our entire online social lives are owned by a half dozen or so corporations, all of which are owned by rabid Zionists.
The internet today is mostly composed of places where everything is catered to us. Algorithms push us content based on the things we've already engaged with; ads are targeted towards us specifically, using terrifying amounts of personal data to do so. The internet has become something passively fed *to* us instead of something we actively choose to engage with, and we have become passive consumers of content where we were once actual, active users.
The thing is that critical thinking isn't just choosing whether to accept or deny things as they're served to you on a silver platter. Critical thinking also involves going out of your way to look for the things that won't come to you of their own volition. And sometimes doing things for yourself is fucking annoying! But it's necessary.
