This definitely seems to be a fundamental accessibility barrier in Mastodon.
AltText accessibility for video shouldn’t be restricted to specific classes of devices or clients.
Although it seems to be a barrier more for those of us with low vision who use mobile vs blind users who may rely more on desktop and screen readers, it’s a real problem nonetheless.
And even though @DangerousSafe has embedded AltText in their videos, if the large proportion of users who use mobile clients cannot see that it exists or access it, there will be - if unfairly - an adverse impact in terms of reach on both the creator and users.
Unfortunately, since I have declined to establish a GitHub account for personal use due to privacy concerns, I’m not sure how to let the developers know about this specific barrier.
As an alternative workaround, I’m wondering if posting in PeerTube (and then boosting and quoting to Mastodon) would be a work around. The description text for the PeerTube video could capture the text.
Anyway, I’d like to give kudos to DangerousSafe for their good humour about my concerns and for helping uncover an issue.
