I think it’s both, but not in the way that people usually frame it.
Mastodon now has a new CEO and resources. They're not VC-scale or profit-driven, but they still have real capacity.
Meanwhile, someone from EuroSky is in Brussels every week. The difference in behavior is clear: they are actively selling their project.
This looked like an important event, yet Mastodon didn't post anything. No note, no visibility. Honestly, that feels like a serious strategic oversight.
What makes this more frustrating is that there are plenty of passionate people in the Fediverse who would help - some already do as volunteers. However, it increasingly feels like Mastodon’s leadership lacks a business- and strategy-oriented perspective beyond building good software.
At this stage, software quality alone isn’t enough.

So many reasons
boiling it down is really hard
- no ads, billionaires, corporate VC
- no murky one-size-fits-all (or click/profit/rage driven) algorithm
- you can migrate so you're not held hostage - find an instance that best suits you or roll your own for cheap
- less ragebait or drive for "clout"
- leads to more focus on content & engagement
- run by volunteers
- better vibes
- custom emojis!

I've had the Local and Federated timelines restored to my account, which is on Mastodon.social.
(My server removed them--I'm assuming that's a choice each server admin can make. I don't know if other server amins have done the same.)
Anyway, one of the 'selling points' of Mastodon is that there's no algorithm. I guess you could argue we each design our own algorithm by the people/hashtags we follow, the lists we create, etc.

I know I keep talking about this but the fact that Mastodon's home feed has no engagement-based algorithm is something I love about it.
I like it because it means that I'm directly responsible for my own garden.
