When people ask me why I don't use Meta products, or those of any other surveillance-capitalist company, this is one good reason.
The other good reasons are fairly well summed up by Shoshana Zuboff's 'Surveillance Capitalism'.
'Meta, which also owns WhatsApp, suffered a landmark court defeat alongside Google last month after being accused of failing to protect its users from harm.
A court in Los Angeles found the companies liable for a woman’s childhood social media addiction, in a ruling which could have widespread ramifications for the way the platforms are operated in the future.'

En nyt oikein tiedä miten tämä asia pitäisi paketoida. Poistin pari päivää sitten Facebook-tilini. Mietin, pitääkö ihmisille tosiaan kertoa, miksi? Eikö kaikki ymmärräkään sitä ihan tuosta vaan? Tunnen oloni vähän hölmöksi, kun alan selittää Metasta ja tästä kaikesta.
Samaan aikaan tosi monen yrityksen ja yhdistyksen olennaisin tiedotus on Facebookissa tai Instagramissa. Välttämättä ei ole edes nettisivuja, saati sähköpostitiedotusta edes niille, jotka sitä toivoisivat.
On yrityksiä ja yhdistyksiä, joissa atk-osaamista ei juuri ole, ja silloin vaikkapa Facebook tuntuu tosi helpolta tavata tiedottaa. Ymmärrän sen. Mutta siinä on se huono puoli, että pikku hiljaa muodostuu käsitys, että jos tieto on vaikkapa Facebookissa, se on kaikkialla. Näin ei ole, vaan silloin tieto nimenomaan on muurin takana.
En usko, että syyllistäminen vie eteenpäin, joten en lähde siihen. Mutta asiat on muutoksessa. Ajattelin ensin, että heitän vaan hanskat tiskiin ja odotan.
Mutta ei, ehkä minulla onkin mielipide: Tiedotusta ei pidä jättää yhden kanavan varaan, vaan monikanavaisuutta pitää alkaa taas lisätä. Julisteet ilmoitustauluille, kyltit tienvarsille, nettisivut, sähköpostit, paikallislehdet, puskaradio, mainoslehtiset... Ja jos oikein rohkeaksi haluaa heittäytyä, niin fediversumi.

Setting up a server for a local chapter of a larger organization. They haven't asked me to do so, but I hope when I present it to someone they'll be interested in using it. #Linktree and #Instagram DMs can't be the main ways of building community and onboarding newcomers.
Planning to host an #irc server and web based client as well as a #CMS to allow leaders to build a real website with minimal knowledge.
May expand from there if people are interested.
