I need to rewrite my own contributor name in a git history? Whats the best way to do this?

Decided to start playing around with a self-hosted instance of GitLab for my work CI/CD. Initially it was going to just be a backup in case Azure DevOps or GitHub disappeared (or enshittified), but I'm liking the features so much it might become our primary platform quite quickly.

Just recently started using #git's #worktree feature, and now I wish I did this years ago. Being able to not just view but do actual work in more than one branch in parallel — without having to stash/commit/checkout all the time.. absolutely amazing. I'm still new with this, so could be there are some things (good or bad) I have yet to discover... but at least currently this feels like the most underrated feature of git that I'm aware of.

Awesome when a rebase over 650 commits for a branch from 3 months ago just works #git
when I install git thru homebrew on my Mac, I can't `git push` (or `git anything`) to a locally hosted gitea with a self signed cert from a self made Root-CA from inside a motherfucking tmux session.
This cost me HOURS to find out.
And because 'something, something, security' apple will kill me again with this once I have rebooted my machine in 3-4 weeks, because then my kitty terminal might have lost the Local Network permissions again. And I will have forgotten this of course.
And all this just because I wanted to push my latest dotfiles so I can use them on the fresh nixOS install on the second machine.
Sometimes I really hate the world.
But I won't lie: I am really relieved now.
That was torture.

git submodules really are awful but sometimes they're the hero you need, even if they're not the hero you deserve.
(This PSA brought to you by me ripping out my non existent hair trying to replace an old repo with a new one at the same submodule location. TL:DR - if you're still seeing the old stuff you want 'git submodule sync'. Ungh)

@mgorny Thanks for planning to bring up my bug (https://bugs.gentoo.org/963069) for discussion in the council. I personally use OpenPGP with all bells and whistles, but agree that what happens lately (#LibrePGP vs #RFC9580) is a s**tshow, and #OpenPGP was never easy to use. When it comes down to it, we should think about what the main use of OpenPGP at Gentoo is. And, that's signing commits if I am not mistaken. If #RFC9580 and #LibrePGP folks can't reach an agreement, I hope that #Git gets some logic implemented that allows it to automatically delegate the task of v5 (LibrePGP) or v6 (RFC9580) signature verification to the correct OpenPGP tool. In that case, users are free to choose the tool of their choice for Git commit signing.
