The reason the Fediverse is more necessary now than it ever has been, is because by design, it objectively anyone who uses it, regardless of any socioeconomic status they've ever had or ever will, if and only if they are not objectively dangerous towards society.
Content that is already illegal and should be in any jurisdiction who takes themselves seriously, is already defederated by any instance who takes themselves seriously. Likewise extremists. Likewise those who enjoy hurting people just because they can. Likewise those who would like to infringe upon the inalienable rights with which everyone including themselves were born. Likewise predators. Et cetera.
If you want to make the Internet safe, or at least as safe as it reasonably can be for everyone, including children, and also including anyone else who is vulnerable for any reason, this is what that's supposed to look like.
The law itself still exists, with or without age verification, and you can still report bad actors, with or without age verification.
I am 31 as of this exact moment, and I will be 32 on Friday. I just told you my date of birth. I could very easily be lying to you right now, and I'm not. I could very easily prove to you that I'm telling the truth right now, and I won't.

I probably complain quite a lot about stuff here I think could be better, but that the #Fediverse exists and functions really is pretty impressive, especially when you think about how hard it is to cultivate something that is both diverse and interoperable. It is hope in a time when that is particularly scarce.
