For experienced Linux users who are familiar with VPS or dedis, a self-hosted instance is a good option. The instance would run Mastodon or #Pleroma or a fork or a work-alike.
This approach has the advantage of allowing one to make the instance work exactly as desired while while remaining part of the #Fediverse.
For others, a general instance will usually work fine because in most cases anybody can follow anybody from any instance. However, it doesn't hurt to look for focused communities. Just a few examples include:
