If you really think about it: The #Fediverse works similar to how the structure of human civilization works.
• You’re on a server which is like a home town.
• It exists within a world that is quite large and other home towns are connected to it.
• There is a way to see what is going on in the different home towns, like exploration.
• Each home town has their own “local government” which is moderation. But there is no central government or moderation.
It’s actually quite beautiful when you can picture it all together. I’m really hoping as time goes on it gets more polished and less technical for the average user, because that will make it larger than it is now.

During this Nobel Prize season we can once again marvel at the glaring discrepancy between the deep knowledge and expertise of individuals in specific domains and the almost idiotic behavior of society at large.
Bridging that gap, diffusing knowledge so that no brain is left behind and the whole of society acts as something more (rather than something less) than its parts..
This is the ultimate task of the #fediverse and nothing else will deliver us from the ugliest predicaments.

Das sollte, so finde ich, Anlass genug für Rotkreuzgliederungen sein, für ihre Social-Media-Angebote diese Plattform zu nutzen. Paradoxe Würdigung: Grimme Institut zeichnet Fediverse aus, ist aber nicht im Fediverse?
Eine bemerkenswerte Kontroverse prägt den diesjährigen Grimme Online Award: Das Grimme-Institut würdigt Eugen Rochko stellvertretend für Mastodon und das gesamte Fediverse in der Kategorie "Spezial" – nutzt aber selbst ausschließlich kommerzielle Social Media Plattformen.
Zumindest konnte ich keinen Account finden. Lasse mich da gerne eines besseren belehren.
OK bei Threads sind sie vertreten, das hat ja irgendwie eine Anbindung ans Fediverse. Aber so richtig Teil ist das meiner Meinung nach nicht.
Die Auszeichnung für das Fediverse
Die Jury lobte Mastodon als "Prototyp für dezentrale Netzwerke" mit "anti-kapitalistischer Plattformlogik" und betonte, dass nur das Fediverse noch eine Alternative zu den kommerziellen Angeboten US-amerikanischer oder chinesischer Provenienz biete. Die Begründung: Es mangele an Räumen, wo Menschen respektvollen Austausch pflegen können, glaubwürdige Informationen finden und ihre Daten nicht kommerziell verwertet werden.
Das Institut bleibt bei kommerziellen Plattformen
Paradoxerweise kommuniziert das Grimme-Institut selbst ausschließlich über:
- Instagram (@grimme_institut)
- Threads (@grimme_institut)
- YouTube (GrimmeOnlineAward)
- Die eigene Website
Ein offizieller Mastodon- bzw Fediverse-Account des Instituts existiert anscheinend nicht – trotz der Würdigung der Bedeutung dezentraler Netzwerke.
Vorbild öffentlich-rechtliche Medien
Interessant ist der Kontrast zu öffentlich-rechtlichen Medien: ARD und ZDF haben bereits 2023 eigene Mastodon-Instanzen (ard.social, zdf.social) gestartet. ARD-Vorsitzender Kai Gniffke bezeichnete dies als "vielversprechenden Ansatz, das Internet und Social Media anders zu denken – stärker auf Nutzer fokussiert und weniger abhängig von amerikanischen oder chinesischen Tech-Konzernen."
Diese Kontroverse zeigt die Herausforderung vieler Organisationen: Während sie die Bedeutung des Fediverse theoretisch anerkennen, bleiben sie praktisch bei den reichweitenstarken kommerziellen Plattformen. Das Grimme-Institut könnte durch eine eigene Fediverse-Präsenz Vorreiter werden und seine Werte glaubwürdig leben.
