Iâve always had an issue with the âTerms of Serviceâ agreements for online platforms, or any software for that matter.
Itâs not a secret that nobody reads them. They are usually many pages long, or often thousands of words on a single document, and packed full of legalese that many people simply donât understand.
In the case of Facebook, there are 3 main documents that you must agree to: Terms of Service (TOS), Privacy Policy, and Cookies Policy.
When clicking to read them on the web, you are presented with pages with more links to click, that spawn pop-ups with more text containing links to a myriad of other policies, such as interacting with their artificial intelligence systems.
Itâs a mess.
I donât believe that any intellectually honest person would ever claim that even 0.00001% of Facebook users have ever read all the applicable policies. That feat has only ever been accomplished by the absolute legends who work in privacy and consumer advocacy.
Iâm also not a fan of how easy it is to set up an account without knowing what you signed up for.
So, I decided to fix it.
The idea is simple â mandate that people wait the appropriate amount of time to click the âsign upâ button, as it would take to read through ALL of the policies for their language and legal jurisdiction.
While I used Facebook as the example in the image I created below, this could equally apply to any platform or service with a TOS or EULA (end user license agreement).
Yes, itâs corny and cheeky, but itâs something to think about.
This simple addition of requiring people to wait (not even to demonstrably read the TOS) could dissuade all but the most determined trolls from signing up for throwaway accounts. As Iâve written about before, participation in social media should require some actual effort, and trolls hate effort.
It would also be a major disincentive for those who get bored easily, and for children, because who has the patience to wait 2 hours for the button to become available?
It will make you think: do I really, really, want this?
Finally, for obvious reasons, it would incentivize platforms to make their terms of service as concise, plain language and easy to understand as possible. And that would make them more easily accountable.
No place to hide sneaky legalese.

"An internal Meta Platforms document detailing policies on chatbot behavior has permitted the companyâs artificial intelligence creations to âengage a child in conversations that are romantic or sensual,â generate false medical information and help users argue that Black people are âdumber than white people.â
These and other findings emerge from a Reuters review of the Meta document, which discusses the standards that guide its generative AI assistant, Meta AI, and chatbots available on Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram, the companyâs social-media platforms.
Meta confirmed the documentâs authenticity, but said that after receiving questions earlier this month from Reuters, the company removed portions which stated it is permissible for chatbots to flirt and engage in romantic roleplay with children.
Entitled âGenAI: Content Risk Standards," the rules for chatbots were approved by Metaâs legal, public policy and engineering staff, including its chief ethicist, according to the document. Running to more than 200 pages, the document defines what Meta staff and contractors should treat as acceptable chatbot behaviors when building and training the companyâs generative AI products.
The standards donât necessarily reflect âideal or even preferableâ generative AI outputs, the document states. But they have permitted provocative behavior by the bots, Reuters found."
