Can we talk about social media addiction?

Back in the 90s i was really into bbs's. Like the old school text boards that you'd dial into. Sometimes i'd feel like i -needed- to login. just to see if my friends were on or to check on some of the games i played. But i was a teenager. i didn't have responsibilities to get in the way and once i did i found that the need faded.

Fast forward though to mainstream social media. Namely facebook in this example. I've been a facebook user since... well.. it's been a while. early 2010s. And now instead of needing a computer with a modem i could check on the face from anywhere. And even as the glaring privacy concerns started to crop up i stayed. Because my friends were there. or my youtube channel promotions, or my brand awareness... Always something.

It got to the point where at any moment that my brain didn't have something to do, i'd pop open the facebook app and just scroll. Sure i found entertainment there. but more and more recently i also found rage. Arguments over politics, people being terrible to each other, "news" that i could never tell if it was real or not.

So two weeks ago. when my facebook feed blew up with people being horrible about the cold blooded assassination of a political activist... i decided to pull the plug. I deleted the app from my devices and closed my facebook browser tabs. I haven't been back except to check on some facebook marketplace listings i've got running.

But here's the thing. Whenever i'm idle. whenever i pick up my phone and have nothing immediate to do on it. My brain still wants me to check facebook and i have to make myself stop. I almost reflexively start looking for the app on my home screen where it used to be.

I usually redirect myself here. but once i've finished catching up i find that i want to check on facebook! It's bothersome. i've never really dealt with any form of addiction before. Cigarettes were never a thing for me even though i was surrounded by friends who smoked. Alcohol has never been a vice i've developed a dependence on. harder drugs have never even been a consideration. But facebook..

Anyway. just venting a guess. Has anyone else gone through this? Thanks for listening.
