On Why I Am Leaving Corporate Social Media

Originally posted this on Facebook over a year ago, after an extended hiatus there, and just prior to doing another extended logging off. I think it is relevant to all those moving away from corporate social media as well:
So, folks, the few day visit back here has been nice, but time for me to sign off again.
Why do I dislike FB now? Because I actually love FB, or rather the original promise of it back when I joined in 2009, when I was able to reconnect with so many friends I had lost touch with from grade and high school, Berklee, and Baltimore, and I was able to strengthen connections I had in NYC, and with fellow music makers, and colleagues and clients in my profession from all across the world as well.
But since then that experience has been steadily eroded - by increasingly manipulative algorithmic feeds that hide posts by my closest friends, while pushing sponsored ads in their place; by doing relentless data mining which ends up in the hands of some shady entities (e.g. Cambridge Analytica); by having posts hidden if they promote ones music, biz or other sites (unless you pay them exorbitant fees to make these “sponsored” posts that is); by pushing to the forefront posts that generate outrage, mindless distraction or divisive helplessness, all for the sake of “engagement”; by “reels” of short videos which I end up clicking on despite myself, that make me feel like I’ve wasted time and consumed mental junk food; by making the third party mobile apps I use to keep FB from snooping the data on my entire device increasingly crippled; by having any photos and words posted sucked up into their AI training data sets; by ignoring issues of scammers copying or stealing accounts here; by ignoring issues of scammers using fraudulent claims in their ads here; by allowing (and even promoting) bad actors and bots that push disinformation and hate.
AND Meta does horrifically unethical actions itself, that I do want to be part of supporting, such as deliberately preying on the negative emotions of teenaged users solely to advertise more effectively to them; by allowing itself to be a tool towards organizing genocidal actions in Myanmar; and by now openly supporting and even donating to a regime which has been working to crush our civil liberties and destroy our economy.
But there IS a solution to this! There is indeed an entire internet outside the walled off virtual dystopia of Meta, where there are in fact lots of services one can connect on that are free from ads, data mining, algorithmic manipulations, and corporate ownership. And those are the places I will be at, even if sadly lots of folks I want to stay on touch with don’t frequent them. Still, I’ve found as far as my mental health, and as far as “putting my money where my mouth is” it ends up better for me, even if I have to get over a bunch of FOMO (Fear Of Missing Out) when I log off here.
While I’m not yet ready to delete my FB account - given I still have a large number of folks that I care about that I have no other way of contacting or keeping in touch with other than here, I still occasionally receive a few inquiries for biz here (ironically nearly all from my personal page, and almost none from my biz page), AND I don’t want someone hijacking my profile here after I delete it - I AM trying to minimize my use as much as I feel is optimum for my well being, and so I don’t contribute towards “active user” counts for Meta as much.
SO - hope to see some of y’all “on the other side” - YOU are the reason I still dig the “social” part of “social media” - and here is also hoping that I can get to hang with more of y’all sooner than later “In Real Life”. PEACE!

@arschkrampe Ich hab noch #Apple, #Google und #Meta als größte Posten auf der Liste. Google und Apple nehme ich alsbald in Angriff. Da muss ich nur noch schauen, wo ich überall die entsprechenden Mailadressen verwende und letztlich das #Smartphone mit #iodeOS ausstatten.
Mein #Facebook und #Instagram Account interessiert mich schon seit Monaten nicht mehr. Nur #Whatsapp wird nahezu unmöglich, fürchte ich...🙄
