I got bit by Issue #3232414: Image Media thumbnail alt text cannot be changed without reuploading the image in a view and wondering why my alt text wasn’t updating in that view despite it being fine in a node or media entities.
I guess the workaround for now is to never use the MediaThumbnailFormatter (media_thumbnail) plugin when displaying entity references to media entities. Instead use EntityReferenceEntityFormatter (entity_reference_entity_view) plugin and configure a view display to do the same thing.
I like the proposed resolution to implement a method for classes the implement MediaSourceInterface to handle their own change resolution. This could use some work to confirm it is backwards-compatible, which at the moment, if a class does not implement the base class, it wouldn’t be.
