@me_the_fl00f the human behind the software is always the 'problem'. When I setup a bare metal mailserver without knowing how to setup a mailserver, and the IP gets blacklisted due to an invalid setup and missing certificates and DNS records, is the mailserver the problem? The bare metal hosting? Or is it the person that should have learned about setting up a mailserver before setting up a mailserver?

'Problem' in general is the wrong word here. Every failure, e.g. exposed docker ports, or a blacklisted IP of a mailserver, is just a chance to learn and to get better at selfhosting things.

I just like to invite people to try things before judging them. To make mistakes and to learn. Try docker, fail at it, rant about it and get better at running docker next time.

@me_the_fl00f I really don't want to defend Docker because it gets a lot of things wrong, such as port exposure. But it also does a lot of things extremely well. I don't want to set up Forgejo, Synapse, my blogs, various databases and my mail server on bare metal. Everything runs without any problems in Docker. As with anything you run, you just have to know what to watch out for.

@me_the_fl00f I think you're allowing a false bias to cloud your judgement here.

Docker often works perfectly well; it's just that people don't tend to talk about it when it's functioning properly.

I can set up a bare-metal server with a firewall, a reverse proxy and ten running Docker services in twenty minutes. The most complicated part isn't Docker. It really takes zero manpower.

@me_the_fl00f Of course, you can also self-host using Docker. Claiming that 'Docker is broken' makes absolutely no sense.

You just need to understand your tools. The same goes for Docker's strengths and weaknesses. If you don't, you're bound to fail. Failing and complaining about it is fine, though. There's no better way to learn.

Self-hosting doesn't necessarily mean bare-metal hosting. Otherwise, it would be called bare-metal hosting.

People: I #selfhost
People: I use
#docker for #selfhosting
People:
#docker is broken
Me: maybe you should not
#selfhost if you can´t do that on bare-metal because noise about broken things is not #selfhosting ...

Just migrated from the #Snap version of #RocketChat to the #Docker version. Snap was the officially supported method a decade ago. No longer. Had to move to Docker in order to upgrade from v7 to v8.

Not for nothing, but it was a giant pain the ass to get FileSystem uploads working in Docker. Otherwise the migration went fairly smoothly.

is retiring App Runner. A bit sad! - I had just started using it and I liked it! "ECS Fargate / Docker Easy-button". I used it to host an Text-so-speech service as a in a container. Ran great. For the web app, it's just a static HTML form on an S3 / Cloudfront website.
