Question about the data used by AI models. Specifically #ChatGPT and the #Google #Gemini offerings.

In 2005 I helped expose a group of Dutch neo-nazis / POS. As some kind of retribution I got targeted online. The only bit close to a "big deal" was a clumsy attempt at doxing using a combo of -then- public photos and embellished facts shared in simple websites.

I got most of it removed quickly, and the remainders in ~2014/5 (thanks GDPR).

Quoting unixdigest on how #AI is causing harm that isn’t justified by its utility:

[…] All the Big Tech public AIs, whether it's #Claude, #CoPilot, #ChatGPT, #Gemini, or any of others, make serious mistakes in code, almost all the time. When things just seem to work, it's often because the code is too basic, the AI misses vital validation steps, vital security steps, it sometimes hallucinates code that does nothing in the program, etc. So, the code "works", but the program is really bad. The amateur developer is oblivious to all of this.

[…] The bad that the AI technology is causing is NOT AT ALL outweighed by the usefulness IMHO.

unixdigest.com/articles/the-re

Couldn’t agree more. Amateur developers love AI because they get “working” code quickly but can’t see hidden bugs, security issues, or quality problems due to lack of experience. Worse, their learning is stalled because they rely on AI instead of studying documentation and understanding technology. Which also means they can’t spot or fix bugs. This is a disaster waiting to happen because companies are already blindly integrating AI without realizing future problems. On the other hand, lazy but experienced developers love AI as a time-saver and CAN fix the mistakes AI makes. Artisan programmers don’t like AI because it produces slop code and the time spent fixing it exceeds doing it right from the start.

About the use of the term “hallucinations” with AI, anthropomorphic language like “hallucination,” “thinking,” “learning,” and claiming systems have “perceptions” is part of the AI hype machine that misleads people about what these systems actually are and do.

[…] “It matters what words we use when we talk about these technologies. For instance, in our writing, we don’t use the term ‘hallucination’ to discuss the errors of LLMs, for two reasons. First, if it’s used tongue-in-cheek, it is making light of what can be symptoms of serious mental illness. Second, ‘hallucination’ refers to the experience of perceiving things that aren’t there. But LLMs actually don’t have perceptions, and suggesting that they do is yet more unhelpful anthropomorphization. That means we also avoid assigning thought processes to these systems, or saying that they can ‘think’. Metaphors have power, they structure the frames of discourse, and they can subtly and insidiously encourage certain ways of understanding technology and the social systems it is embedded in.”
