As More Filipinos Visit Vietnam, Philippines Attracts Less Vietnamese Tourists
In 2025, more than 480,000 Filipinos visited Vietnam while the Philippines failed to attract a significant number of Vietnam tourists which reflected its weakness with foreign visitors, according to a new report by VnExpress.
The travel platform Agoda confirmed that online search by Filipino users for accommodation in Vietnam surged 86% in 2025. Vietnam itself achieved an all-time high of 21.2 million foreign tourists who arrived in 2025. The Philippines attracted only 5.94 foreign tourists last year.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news report of VnExpress. Some parts in boldface…
Vietnam is increasingly emerging as a preferred destination for Philippine travelers, welcoming over 482,000 arrivals in 2025, thanks to ASEAN visa exemption policies and closer bilateral exchanges.
According to the Tourism Information Center under the Vietnam National Authority of Tourism (VNAT), since the Covid pandemic, the number of Filipino visitors to Vietnam has recovered and grown impressively. Filipino tourists are particularly fond of destinations such as Da Nang, Sa Pa, Phu Quoc and Nha Trang, as well as Vietnam’s distinctive cuisine.
VNAT Director Nguyen Trung Khanh said Vietnam and the Philippines share many similarities in tourism resources, natural conditions and culture. Both are located in Southeast Asia and have favorable conditions for cooperation in developing tourism products and attracting visitors.
The expansion of direct flight routes between major cities by airlines of both countries has also significantly contributed to boosting tourist arrivals.
Conversely, the number of Vietnamese tourists traveling to the Philippines remains unstable and has even shown a declining trend recently. This is partly due to increasing competition among destinations in the region.
Philippine Ambassador to Vietnam Francisco Noel R. Fernandez III noted that Philippine airlines are actively implementing various initiatives to attract tourists. The Philippines is also considering establishing a tourism representative office in Vietnam to strengthen its presence and promote cooperation.
Tourism cooperation between the two countries was established early on and continues to be reinforced. In 2026, the Philippines will host the ASEAN Tourism Forum (ATF) under the rotational mechanism, with Vietnam’s tourism sector actively participating in the event.
Let me end this piece by asking you readers: What is your reaction to this development? If you are a citizen of the Philippines, have you thought about touring Vietnam recently? Do you think the government of the Philippines has not done enough to promote itself actively to the Vietnamese?

Two Suspects Arrested In Parañaque City Over Illegal Substances Worth More Than P3.7 Million
Recently in the City of Parañaque, the local police successfully pulled off a buy-bust operation that resulted in two suspects arrested and the seizure of illegal substances worth over P3.7 million, according to a Manila Bulletin news report.
To put things in perspective, posted below is an excerpt from the news report of the Manila Bulletin. Some parts in boldface…
Police arrested two high-value targets and seized more than P3.7 million worth of shabu in a buy-bust operation in Parañaque City.
Parañaque City Police chief Col. Nicolas Pinon said the suspects, identified as Toto, 52, and Ronnie, 53, both residents of Manuyo Dos, Las Piñas City, were arrested in Barangay San Isidro.
Pinon said the Station Drug Enforcement Unit (SDEU) launched the operation after receiving information that the suspects, though based in Las Piñas, were conducting illegal drug activities in Parañaque.
The suspects were caught selling 25 grams of shabu worth P170,000 to an undercover police officer. Further search led to the recovery of 11 additional sachets of shabu weighing about 525 grams, valued at P3,750,000, inside a black eco bag.
In total, authorities confiscated around 550 grams of shabu worth P3,740,000, along with a Redmi cellphone and the buy-bust money.
The suspects are now detained at the police custodial facility and face charges for violating Republic Act 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002.
Brig. Gen. Randy Arceo, Southern Police District (SPD) director, said the arrest highlights the police’s continued commitment to combating illegal drugs.
Let me end this post by asking you readers: What do you think about this recent development? If you are a resident of Parañaque, do you think there could be more individuals from different places doing illegal drug activities in the city? Why do you think Parañaque is a hot spot when it comes to illegal drugs?

The Passenger
3–5 minutesWe’re all just along for the ride as we hurtle through space on this planet – a spinning rock that (I imagine) is currently shaking its head at us!
The ground keeps shifting, the social fabric is shredding and it feels like we’re sinking faster than the Titanic!
Am I the only one who feels like we’re trapped in a disaster movie?
A bad one.
Where they’ve blown all the budget on the computer generated special effects. The writers are having “creative differences” and the director’s lost the plot!
Now, it’s all starting to go a bit sci-fi…less Towering Inferno, more….Terminator.
It’s not just me that’s feeling overwhelmed…even our planet is struggling to keep up.
Think your life is out of balance? The Earth is, too! Humans have shifted so much water, ice, and soil around that the planet’s axis is wobbling….literally!
We’ve stripped forests and emptied aquifers, moving the Earth’s centre of gravity. And leaving us standing on a planet that’s fighting to find its balance.
Well, I say “we”….but it’s not really “us” that’s done all of that, is it? I don’t remember any referendums asking me to choose between my life or the planet’s…
We do accept it though – it’s just the extortionate high “price of progress”. It’s a great system: where billionaires get to launch themselves into orbit, while we get to keep the ecological fallout! (Finally, something that “trickles down” – just a shame it’s mostly carbon emissions and toxic e-waste!)
While we watch our world wobble, we’re rapidly building a virtual one. But, that’s adding to the problems it’s supposed to be fixing.
A physical weight that’s contributing to the literal and metaphorical imbalance of the planet.
One of the largest contributors to this are data centres – the physical manifestation of our digital lives. Consuming power and water at a rate that’s tilting the scales even faster.
These things are thirsty! A single large data centre can consume up to 5 million gallons of water daily for cooling, frequently drawing from drinking water supplies.
But, even worse, these centres are often built in water-stressed areas.
In Mesa, Arizona – a region already grappling with severe drought – a single Google data centre campus has a permit to consume up to 5.5 million gallons of water daily. A volume roughly equivalent to the daily needs of 23,000 local residents.
As AI grows, the data centre industry is expected to more than double its water consumption by 2030, with some estimations reaching 1.2 trillion litres annually.
And then there’s the power consumption….
Data centres consume approximately 2% to 3% of global electricity, a figure projected to rise significantly to 13% by 2030.
The problem is, a lot of it is wasted. A massive chunk of power is eaten up by supporting infrastructure – cooling and power management – rather than the actual computing.
Think of it like having a super-duper-intelligent teenager living in your house…
…90% of the time, they are in their room creating incredible artwork, solving complex maths problems and learning three languages…all at once.
But, 10% of the time, they’re coming downstairs, pulling a fully cooked lasagna out of the fridge, taking one bite and throwing the rest in the bin.
They have every light, TV and computer in the house on…while they take a three-hour shower…with the air-con on and the windows wide open…
I dunno, it all seems a bit reckless doesn’t it?
We’re sacrificing gallons of fresh water (the stuff human beings need to, you know…not die!) just to keep these server farms cool through evaporation. Often, in already water-stressed regions!
A single ChatGPT query requires nearly 10 times more electricity to process than a standard Google search. AI image generation can take 2–5 litres of water for just a few images.
And for what? To prompt AI to generate super-real images of a “cat lawyer” presenting evidence to a jury of other cats?!
We are transforming our shared planet into a giant, expensive toaster. Burning through resources for the sake of more…digital brainrot?
Now, that’s the kind of plot twist that makes me want to shout at the screen!
But, maybe it’s not too late to rewrite the ending…..
We don’t have to be passengers along for the ride as we head for disaster. We can start to steer it in a different direction.
Be the engineers of a more sustainable digital future. The same ingenuity that built these massive models can be redirected toward cooling technology that doesn’t evaporate our shared, limited resources.
We can demand transparency, push for energy-efficient data centres and use these tools for solving critical problems. Not just “creating” more AI “slop”….
Maybe, we don’t have to choose between AI and a habitable planet.
But, we must choose to stop ignoring the cost.
Citizen Jane x ✌️

Taking Flight On A Glasswing
Every time I hear the warnings about the current or next big thing in Artificial Intelligence, I’m reminded of the Surgeon General’s warnings that are printed on packs of cigarettes. I’m also reminded of every new fad I’ve seen in my lifetime, that might have inched over into a trend, but eventually ended up waiting for its turn on the nostalgia wheel of time.
As the world was holding its breath from the civilization destroying threats that sprung forth from the mind of the U.S. President, and then exhaling as they turned into the latest episode of “Bluff, Bluster, and Bullshit,” we were learning about a new AI leap and threat from Anthropic potentially as dire, called Claude Mythos Preview. To get ahead of any damage this coming attraction might visit upon us, Anthropic created Project Glasswing. Given that the raving lunatic in the White House came to power a second time with a civilization destroying manual in hand called Project 2025, I’m more than a bit leery of anything with a title that leads with the word “Project.”
From what I’ve read, Mythos is the latest innovation in Anthropic’s flavor of Artificial Intelligence. It is so powerful that it has sought out and found vulnerabilities in so much of the software the world runs on, that Anthropic is only releasing it to a hand full of companies (Apple, Microsoft, Google, Broadcom, JPMorganChase, the Linux Foundation, NVIDIA, and more.) That’s Project Glasswing. Tech overlords uniting to protect us from themselves. (The lawyers will have a field day.)
Anthropic, having been declared by the U.S. as an unacceptable national security threat and supply chain risk, nevertheless is also working with the U.S. Government. Somehow security and existential threats always seem to become negotiating partners with their foes when money is at stake. Also occasionally when global annihilation is knocking on the door.
The way I interpret the idea behind Project Glasswing is that these companies, and presumably governments, might use Mythos to seek out all of the vulnerabilities, and perhaps obliterate them before they can filter down into things like power grids, banking systems, and consumer use. It can supposedly do this at a scale humans can’t. Note that Mythos discovered problems in every operating system, and on a level both big and small, the constantly updating browsers we use on our computers.
During our testing, we found that Mythos Preview is capable of identifying and then exploiting zero-day vulnerabilities in every major operating system and every major web browser when directed by a user to do so. The vulnerabilities it finds are often subtle or difficult to detect.
If you ask me Mythos is exposing quite a few myths as well as vulnerabilities. The sound you hear is PR slide decks about security enhancements in the latest releases of current software being furiously redone.
As M.G. Siegler puts it,
Historically, many vulnerabilities have been fixed only after someone exploited them in some way. Again, that’s because the incentives are in favor of the attacker versus the defender. If and when Mythos-caliber tools are put in the hands of hackers… yeah.
That’s obviously exactly why Anthropic isn’t releasing Mythos to the public and also why they’ve set up Glasswing. While the company may be first to such capabilities, they won’t be the last. They probably don’t even have long to try to get ahead of the situation. While I generally dislike the nuclear weapons analogy for AI, I must admit, this all does feel a bit Manhattan Project-y. The good guys are racing against the clock to implement a new technology before the bad guys catch up. But they will. They always do.
Yeah, that sounds problematic.
Paul Krugman took a break from agonizing and writing about the situation in the Middle East and weighed in with this,
The good news is that Anthropic discovered in the process of developing Claude Mythos that the A.I. could not only write software code more easily and with greater complexity than any model currently available, but as a byproduct of that capability, it could also find vulnerabilities in virtually all of the world’s most popular software systems more easily than before.
The bad news is that if this tool falls into the hands of bad actors, they could hack pretty much every major software system in the world, including all those made by the companies in the consortium.
So, there’s plenty of doom floating around, along with the now clichéd approach to all things AI, that there’s good tech behind all of the bad things that the tech can do. The profits from tobacco helped found the U.S. and twisted science and politics into knots trying not to end up on the ash heap.
I’ve largely stayed away from playing with any of these AI tools and toys, but I follow the news of the advances on all fronts, and those who do play around with it because, like it or not, those who run the world have decided this is our future.
I’ll be honest. Hallucinations aside, I don’t know enough rather or not to trust the software. I have my doubts and I do have fears about the tech. Project Glasswind might be a noble effort. Yet, with a clear mind, I do know enough not to trust any of the humans running the show. Frankly, it feels like they don’t know enough to trust the software either, much less to protect their and our systems from being destroyed by some kid in a basement.
As Natasha MH puts it, not writing about Mythos specifically, but about Artificial Intelligence in general, AI didn’t make you stupid. You were already getting there.
