"Sasha Luccioni: What I’m hearing more and more is that people have ChatGPT or Claude or whatever other LLM open on their desktop all the time. And so they just go to it for any kind of tasks, for example, calculating some math problems.
And so in that case, it really doesn’t make sense because it’s orders of magnitude. It’s like 10,000 times more energy, if I had to put a number on it, than kind of a solar powered small handheld calculator, and that just doesn’t make any sense.
But if you’re doing something that’s, you know, writing a haiku about the beauty of Canadian winters, like maybe that’s something that you can’t do with any other technology but I think it’s worth kind of having this reflection, like, do you need to use Siri for a grocery list?
Or can you have a paper and pen or, you know, something put up on your fridge or even on your phone locally as a notepad thing? So, I mean, it’s all about tasks and trade-offs. And I think the more that people start having these reflections, the less we’re going to see kind of these superfluous uses of AI."
