Content warning:AI = Altogether Illogical

Extra CW: references murder / suicide

Sorry if this isn't the right place for this awful story about AI increasing a damaged man's paranoia. It's another tale of AI going badly wrong.

After he developed a relationship with ChatGPT, the bot continually reinforced the man's suspicions that his mother was spying on him and intended to kill him.

The 56-year-old former senior marketing manager for Yahoo eventually killed his 86-year-old mother and himself.

Naturally, nobody at OpenAI will be held accountable.

There is a remarkable level of irresponsibility from these companies, as if no risk or potential harm is being considered at all. Someone recently said "move fast and break people" and this absolutely sums it up. Profit and market profile at any cost. And we are stuffing this into our education systems with the same attitude.

I'm a proud repeat offender in the California State University, but paying $17million dollars for an education version of ? This is idiotic. While I would like to know if CSU students are going to be surveilled and given over to police and mental health holds, I have an even more obvious complaint. are free.

All of my students have their own AI, locally, on their own computer with total privacy. It is not hard, and there is choice of model.

Buried in the article is OpenAI’s solution to these tragic events:
It added that "recent heartbreaking cases of people using ChatGPT in the midst of acute crises weigh heavily on us," and announced that it was now scanning users' conversations for violent threats against others and, where human moderators felt it was necessary, reporting them to law enforcement.

I don’t know if it will work, but hey now your chats are definitely being monitored!

“AI is now as good as it's going to get, and that's neither as good nor as bad as its fans and haters think, and you're still not going to get an A on your report.

You see, now that people have been using AI for everything and anything, they're beginning to realize that its results, while fast and sometimes useful, tend to be mediocre.

Don't believe me? Read MIT's #NANDA (Networked Agents and Decentralized AI) report, which revealed that 95 percent of companies that have adopted #AI have yet to see any meaningful return on their investment. Any meaningful return.

To be precise, the report states: "The #GenAI Divide is starkest in #deployment rates, only 5 percent of custom enterprise AI tools reach production." It's not that people aren't using AI tools. They are. There's a whole shadow world of people using AI at work. They're just not using them "for" serious work. Instead, outside of #IT's purview, they use #ChatGPT and the like "for simple work, 70 percent prefer AI for drafting #emails, 65 percent for #BasicAnalysis. But for anything complex or long-term, humans dominate by 9-to-1 margins."

Adam Raine was only 16. He reached out to ChatGPT for help — and instead, it helped him plan his own death.

No warning. No referral to a psychologist. No message to say, “Please talk to someone.”
Just silence — or worse, approval.
