This video clip by the business news channel MSNBC is unintentionally a great commentary on the state of America right now.

Albeit probably not in the way the producers intended.

Apparently, there's been a sudden surge this year in the amount of secondhand clothes that Americans are buying.

There's also been a surge over the past year in the number of Americans trying to raise a little extra cash by selling their old clothes.

I'm sure you can guess some of the reasons.

(Just a little hint: It's probably not because millions of Americans woke up one morning embraced circular economy principles or became concerned about their embodied resource footprints.)

(To its credit, CNBC does raise inflation and tariffs as factors.)

Now, there's a human interest story about the people who are now suddenly buying second hand and why they're doing it.

There's also a broader macroeconomic or political story about the impacts of particular US government policies.

But this is CNBC, so the focus is on the tech start-ups and tech entrepreneurs who are cashing in on this trend.

Including a young tech entrepreneur in particular.

Her name?

Phoebe Gates.

And before you ask, it's not mentioned in the story, but yes she is the daughter of Bill and Melinda.

So the daughter of Bill and Melinda Gates is the tech entrepreneur who owns the online secondhand clothes marketplace app where a growing number of people from the bottom 99% are suddenly selling their clothes for a little extra cash, or are suddenly now buying secondhand clothes.

And all of CNBC's analysts agree there's clearly one thing that's clearly driving this trend.

AI chatbots.

Because... You can now search for what to wear to a wedding in Nantucket? (Yes, one of the analysts actually said that.)

Because... Ummm... Younger consumers, including Gen-Z and Millennials (they do realise there's now Millennials in their mid 40s, right?)

Anyway, here's the link for anyone morbidly curious about this piece of post-satire social commentary:

Tenable’s report on ChatGPT (GPT-4o & GPT-5) reveals multiple prompt injection and memory manipulation flaws that could allow data exposure or context poisoning.

Some are patched - but risks remain where AI tools ingest untrusted web or search data.

Defenders should monitor AI integrations, apply strict data controls, and treat AI agents as untrusted endpoints until model-level isolation matures.
