“Bluesky lacks the one federated feature that is absolutely necessary for me to trust it: the ability to leave Bluesky and go to another host and continue to talk to the people I've entered into community with there.”

Is #Bluesky the ancient hacker Ulysses or a normie sailor? Likely the latter.

I have been a tech journalist since the early 2000's and I've seen this happening over and over again. Step by step, they will strip #Bluesky of anything that made it s good and a safe place. If I had to predict, I'd say that the nuclear block will be the next to fall

@padeluun

Sooo shortly after the ominous message of "we updated our terms and conditions", #Bluesky has banned the account of a trans person for *checks notes* "wishing illness" to JKrowling in a response that was showing support for another trans person. When they eventually backtrack on their decision, remember: they were never to be trusted on the first place bsky.app/profile/clairewillett

I like to watch fires from "safety" (bots, bridges, etc.). The semiotic, ontological, & virtual domains I inhabit are memetically safe, unlike where I emigrated from, which is the fire I'm now watching. If I left, maybe you should too.

Content warning:bluesky, moderation

The initiating event for the creation of what became Bluesky and AT protocol was the recognition that no centralized entity could create and manage a single community for everyone.

I don't agree with all their mod decisions, but I _understand_ them and avoid known triggers on a PDS they control.

Anything with a whiff of death threats is going to do it. We all know that by now, right? It's like the ur-example for why centralized moderation is a problem. They don't know you or your context. They have to err on the side of caution even if it looks silly to people with that context.

I really hope the self-hosting story is finished by the time certain famous bigots croak and I can be on my own PDS and most people are on an AppView and relay that aligns with their community's needs.

And that's all I'm going to say.

But I'm sure Jessie Earl will now just run her own PDS or something, because Bluesky is famously so federated… /s

Content warning:Shitpost about wishing people ill

Why wish ill on terrible people when you can hex ‘em? :blobcatwitch:

Note: This is a clearly labeled shit post. But if it weren’t, the harm of a hex would not rise to the level of proportional to the harm caused by JKR. It’s bogus that Rowling is in the clear to maliciously commit harm on a large scale without consequence but merely wishing her ill is enough to get your accounts suspended on some platforms.

Ok real talk for a second. I like #fedi, I do. But a subset of people on here have a serious case of the smug going on and it's frankly vile as fuck. I'm referring to people who go "This wouldn't have happened if you'd just switched to #linux" when someone has a computer issue. Or people deriding others for being on #blueSky which isn't properly proper centralized(tm) and har har dee har when that social network does something that allows folks on here to feel superior.
Gonna give it straight here: it's people like this that essentially make #fedi, as a whole, come across as a bunch of judgy, spiteful, angry nerds that want to be off in their own little corner hiding from the world and judging everyone who doesn't feel the same way. It's akin to that guy at parties who's seen the light and spends the entire time convincing others to buy a hybrid, or go on a keto diet, or try essential oils and yeerety sneer if you don't intend to smoke whatever they're smoking.

@WeirdWriter

It would be interesting to see how they applied that rule if someone said they wished humanity would die out and make way for the next dominant species.

Technically that would be transgression. I might try it if I can remember my user details on #bluesky
