Arbitrary Rhetorical Abstractions Don’t Impress Me
In a good argument, each paragraph should have a main point—a thesis statement—with each sentence supporting that point. If you’re writing an argumentative piece and you make a claim but don’t actually support it, it makes me not really consider most of anything else you have said.
I just read something where the writer said a certain phrase is meaningless. They didn’t explain why it was meaningless or why that point was even there. To me, it suggests the author likes to exaggerate to get their points across. I stop caring to read the rest because it becomes clear to me that you will be make exaggerated claims with a tenuous connection to facts or reality to convince people of something. Those same type of people will often times create random abstractions that sound as if they would fit into a lexicon of something to package together concepts. Arbitrary superfluous portmanteaus are tedious.
Most of my writing on blogs is stream of consciousness. I’m not trying to persuade you. Once my brain hits enough embellishments in your writing, you get flagged as deceptive, and I start to skim or stop reading.
