cannot replicate all of 's features.

Why?

Mastodon is completely decentralised, some of Bluesky's features (e.g trusted labellers) cannot be replicated here without a centralised "source of truth" that Bluesky provides 🦋

AT Proto is kind of tricky to explain, the instances, called PDSs, don't do all the work. There is another network 'bookkeeping' service that is required. When people question #Bluesky's claims of being decentralized this is what they are talking about. If this goes down, all Bluesky goes down.

However, there is also an AT Protocol bookkeeping service that is not run by Bluesky. #Wafrn uses this 3rd party service, and does other magic including talking to directly to PDSs.

@lianna

Wafrn is actually something different and pretty cool. 😎

It's an app with kind of a retro feel, that talks to both the Fediverse and Bluesky. On the Fedi side it is pretty much like other instances, you join one, just like different Mastodon servers.

On the #Bluesky side it is really something different. When Bluesky went down Wafrn didn't skip a beat, because it doesn't use any of the Bluesky infrastructure. Will try a simple description...

Hey #Fediverse!

Quit bitching about #BlueSky being "poorly decentralized"! Or at least hold-off until you actually understand the cost of running a #Mastodon instance.

I'm freeloading on an instance that costs ~$700 a month to run, and from our public feed I predict we only have a few hundred active users. FEW HUNDRED, not whatever metric ass-ton BlueSky has!

~$700 a month is what I used to pay for rent. That's not a pittance. We've also had a head start. People used to mock Mastodon for having outages too, but now look at us, all of us on different instances and the sh*t still works.

Regardless of what BlueSky pays to keep their network up, I think it's a disgrace that Mastodon instances cost so much. I think we should be more ashamed of that.

A 1-3 user AtProto PDS can run on a $2 VPS or a low-spec/no-spec Raspberry Pi. By itself a PDS is useless, but IMO that's a price almost anyone could afford for sovereignty. Given relative post volume I cost my Mastodon host more than that, and I'm a freeloader. 🤷

Oh my holy rabbit. 300 chars on #BlueSky are so short but lets look maybe it will trigger someone there #Palantir & #KarpManifesto are boring. #BioHacking #SyntheticBiology is the future. https://floof.sbs#09 https://floof.sbs#12 multi-layered bio-cipher to hide messages in DNA using Gaussian bell curves, prime numbers, hydrogen-bond checksums & wobble positions of the code sun.
