A sobering way to start the New Year - Manton Reece, creator of Micro.blog has a good blog (unsurprisingly), and discusses stats showing that the monthly active number of users on the Fediverse is slowly shrinking:

manton.org/2025/12/27/fedivers

I can probably attest to this, given how many accounts I found to be dead or abandoned when I had to manually curate the list of people I was following during the process of moving to this account.

As I replied over there, we need the #Fediverse to grow, in order to maintain a diversity of thought and particularly political opinion, especially in the current climate, but the Fediverse definitely has an on-boarding issue that centralised platforms such as Bluesky don't have. #Mastodon is the #ActivityPub tentpole & showcase platform, and if it can't get it sorted, then what can?

Edit: Deleted and re-posted due to timeline weirdness.

I could use more eyes on this by #activityPub developers - I've spent a bunch of time classifying the quirks with respect to how various fediverse software reports user counts in nodeinfo - any comments on whether there are any major quirks I've missed and/or whether I've properly described the quirks I did document?

What are you looking for in social media? (1/N)

privacy.thenexus.today/what-ar

Since you're seeing this on fedi -- or Bluesky, Blacksy, or elsewhere in the ATmosphere -- you already know the value of alternative social media that's not controlled by techbro white supremacist CEO's who make money by exploiting their users and working with their cronies in authoritarian governments.

But, what we have today is only the tip of the iceberg of what's possible.

Kind of funny to see all the #activitypub stuff that’s happening in the logs when I enabled migration mode. Kind of a DoS at first. Still missing a lot of followers through. I remember from last time this process can take a few days.

Self-Hosting my Social Media Profile using WordPress and ActivityPub

After trying ActivityPub on WordPress and finding it a bit janky, I finally got what all the fuss was about thanks to some much-needed updates over the past year or so. Alan Levine wrote a great explainer (and a follow-up) of how he set ActivityPub up on his many Wordpress sites. I do think the official guidance and explainer posts provided by Automattic leave a lot to be desired (although, I didn't check the support forum), but overall, it’s a relatively easy process now, and made that […]

No hacen bien a nadie.

Running your own Fediverse instance and want to become more visible?

You can simply use relay instances to be interconnected with other instances to exchange posts and it works seamless with #Mastodon, #Pleroma, #snac / #snac2 and many other ones! If you're in tech, you might want to use:

https://fedi-relay.gyptazy.com

You can simply add it to get a bigger reach but also to get more interesting content into your own timeline which becomes even more important on single user- & smaller instances.
