Wordpress developer resources says you should have
location = /robots.txt {
allow all;
log_not_found off;
access_log off;
}
in your nginx config. This gets you a 404 error when you try to access /robots.txt
In real life the following works better.
location = /robots.txt {
allow all;
try_files $uri $uri/ /index.php?$args;
log_not_found off;
access_log off;
}
