Streamlining how I post photos

A while back, I migrated all of my Instagram content to this blog. Now, instead of being locked into another walled-garden1, all of my photography lives at https://mark.biek.org/photos/.

I’m very happy with this setup but the process for actually creating a photo post is a bit cumbersome, especially on mobile.

On mobile, I open the Jetpack Mobile app (which is great for making minor edits and keeping up with notifications). Then the process goes like this:

  1. Create a new post.
  2. Click on “Post settings”.
  3. Click “Set Featured Image” and select the image from my camera roll.
  4. After the image has uploaded, I have to set the post category to “Photos” (so it will appear in the photos section of my website).
  5. Add a title and description and publish the post.

Doing it from my desktop is a very similar process. Either way, it’s a lot of clicks.

As a software developer, I like to take matters into my own hands so I created an iOS app and WordPress plugin to make all of this easier.

Introducing: The Photo-Upldr2

https://github.com/markbiek/photo-upldr

Completely open source and probably only useful to me since running it on a device is kind of a pain3 (and I have no plans to publish it to the App Store).

The app looks like this:

It also has a very simple settings page:

The WordPress plugin adds a new REST API endpoint. The app calls the endpoint with the image data and post title. The REST endpoint handles adding the image to the media library and creating the appropriate post. The app also has access to the camera roll so it’s super quick to create a new post.

Both the app and plugin were an experiment in more blatant vibe coding.4 I created “plan files” for both the plugin and the app. These files outlined all of the pieces, how the screens should look, and details of the functionality I wanted. That gave me a pretty solid starting point to iterate on.

I will say that the initial version of both the app and the plugin were pretty rough. I had to go through several rounds of fixing things myself and using Claude Code to make adjustments. But, in the end, I ended up with something functional and it was relatively quick to build.

All in all, a fun experiment that’s made my life a little bit easier.

  1. Of course I still have an Instagram account so I can keep up with other people, I just don’t post to it anymore. ↩︎
  2. All the cool apps leave out vowels. ↩︎
  3. The app itself is React Native and uses the ExpoGo framework. You need to have both an Apple Developer account and an Expo account. I’m doing the paid tier on Expo for now to get faster builds. If you set everything up properly with Expo and Apple, you can use TestFlight to install the app on your device. It just has to be renewed every 90 days. ↩︎
  4. A quick word on vibe coding. The Wikipedia entry says “The developer does not review or edit the code, but solely uses tools and execution results to evaluate it and asks the LLM for improvements”. I definitely heavily reviewed and edited the code for both pieces. ↩︎

Web hosting isn’t just “renting space on a server.” In 2025 it’s about speed, uptime, security, and scaling. Shared, VPS, cloud, or managed — the right choice depends on your traffic, budget & goals. Beginners? Don’t fall for “unlimited” myths.
