Agree and Amplify: Funding Open Source as Digital Infrastructure

Open source software powers critical digital infrastructure, but funding rarely reaches the people who maintain it. In response to Dries Buytaert’s recent post on funding open source for digital sovereignty, I argue that this is not just a government procurement issue. It is a systemic one. From WordPress to Tailwind, widespread adoption is too often mistaken for sustainability. If organizations depend on open source to operate and scale, contributing back (including funding) needs to be treated as a baseline responsibility, not optional goodwill.

Jean Galea has written a phantastic post called

»My 7-Year-Old Wanted to Build a Website.
Should I Still Teach Him WordPress?«

If you're into WP I think it's a must read.

From governance problems to a market overview of other cms solutions and the impact of AI - he describes the situation we're in, and I found myself nodding along.

What will he teach his son? Well, you'll have to read the post.

A few little tweaks and tidy ups over on the business website 🔧

Built with WordPress and the default Twenty Twenty-Five theme.

Super happy to have persevered with block themes and the block editor now.

I stopped offering WordPress/web design services last year, but absolutely love maintaining my own sites 🤩

Still trying to figure out my website outages.

To recap: I have two #MediaWiki wikis and one #WordPress site. And there seems to be _some_ background process which starts soon after 23:00 UTC (or 24:00 in France, where the servers are located) which puts such a strain on the website that I get a lot of "504" errors for a few hours. The exact duration is variable - sometimes it lasts for one or two hours, and sometimes it lasts way into the morning. But I cannot identify what causes it from the Apache logs - there is no clear, consistent trigger to be found there.

Last time I asked customer support, they suggested that I check my plugins and background processes. But I don't know enough about website administration to know where to look.

For what it's worth, my WordPress website uses the following plugins (all updated to the latest versions):

ActivityPub
Contact Form 7
Include Mastodon Feed
JM Twitter Cards
Leaflet Map
MC4WP: Mailchimp for WordPress
TablePress
WP DSGVO Tools (GDPR)

The site is here:
sunkencastles.com/

The extensions on my wiki can be found here:
wiki.sunkencastles.com/wiki/Sp

Does _anyone_ have any idea what kinds of background processes on MediaWiki or WordPress might cause this kind of outage, and how I could check it?

#FediHelp
